US sees stronger hints of Higgs

Hints of the Higgs boson detected last year by a US "atom smasher" have become even stronger, scientists have said.

The news comes amid fevered speculation about an announcement by researchers at the Large Hadron Collider on Wednesday.

Finding the particle would fill a glaring hole in the widely accepted theory of how the Universe works.

This 30-year hunt is reaching an end, with experts confident they will soon be able to make a definitive statement about the particle's existence.

The evidence is piling up... everything points in the direction that the Higgs is there?

End Quote Prof Stefan Soldner-Rembold University of Manchester

The latest findings have come from analysis of data gathered by the US Tevatron particle accelerator, which was shut down at the end of last year.

Researchers squeezed the last information out of hundreds of trillions of collisions produced by the Tevatron - which was based at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Illinois - since March 2001.

This final analysis of the data does not settle the question of whether the Higgs particle exists, but gets closer to an answer.

The scientists see hints of the boson in roughly the same part of the "search region" as the LHC - between the masses of 115 and 135 Gigaelectronvolts (GeV).

The signal is seen at the 2.9-sigma level of certainty, which means there is roughly a one in 1,000 chance that the result is attributable to some statistical quirk in the data.

In particle physics, three sigma counts as "evidence". Claiming a discovery requires a statistical certainty of five sigma - which denotes a one in a million chance that any given result is a fluke.

Sniffing success

Fermilab's Rob Roser, co-spokesperson for the Tevatron's CDF experiment, said: "Our data strongly point toward the existence of the Higgs boson, but it will take results from the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in Europe to establish a discovery."

Stefan Soldner-Rembold, professor of particle physics at the University of Manchester, told BBC News: "The evidence is piling up... everything points in the direction that the Higgs is there."

Statistics of a 'discovery'

  • Particle physics has an accepted definition for a "discovery": a five-sigma level of certainty
  • The number of standard deviations, or sigmas, is a measure of how unlikely it is that an experimental result is simply down to chance rather than a real effect
  • Similarly, tossing a coin and getting a number of heads in a row may just be chance, rather than a sign of a "loaded" coin
  • The "three sigma" level represents about the same likelihood as tossing more than eight heads in a row
  • Five sigma, on the other hand, would correspond to tossing more than 20 in a row
  • With independent confirmation by other experiments, five-sigma findings become accepted discoveries

He added: "At the Tevatron a lot of important work has been done over the last years... it has been essential for arriving at this stage.

"So yes, the Tevatron experiments should get recognition for that, even though the LHC will be the collider to provide the final proof that the Higgs exists."

The Higgs is the cornerstone of the Standard Model - the most successful theory to explain the workings of the Universe - and explains why all other particles have mass.

But it remains on the run; though it is predicted to exist, the particle has never been detected experimentally.

If the LHC confirms the boson's existence, physicists will set about the task of working out whether or not it is the version of the Higgs predicted by the Standard Model.

Many researchers will hope it is not, because that would hint at phenomena outside our current understanding of physics.

The Higgs cannot be seen directly; physicists have to infer its existence by looking at the particles it has ultimately decayed - or transformed - into, and work backwards to "reconstruct" it.

The Tevatron and the LHC look for the boson in different ways. The LHC is expected to present evidence for a Higgs transforming into two photons - the rarest decay path predicted by theory.

The Tevatron appears to see hints of a Higgs transforming into particles known as b quarks - the most common type of decay.

Combining information from both accelerators will provide vital clues about the nature of this potential new particle, and whether it is really the Higgs boson scientists expect.

Most researchers now regard the Standard Model as a stepping stone to some other, more complete theory, which can explain phenomena such as dark matter and dark energy.

A non-conformist Higgs could open the door to a theory called supersymmetry - which predicts that each Standard Model particle is accompanied by a heavier partner known as a "sparticle". Or it could hint at the existence of extra dimensions.

For physicists, these would be more exciting outcomes, and would keep them busy for many years to come.

Storm power outages could last days

Utility crews untangled downed power lines and tree limbs Sunday, working to get the electricity turned back on for millions of people in the mid-Atlantic region facing a second day of 100-degree temperatures without modern conveniences like air conditioning and refrigeration.

Utilities were slowly making progress, but more than 2.5 million people still had no electricity and could only watch their thermostats climb. It could be several days before all the power outages are restored.

Strong winds from the storms late Friday toppled massive trees onto cars and blocked roads, and officials asked residents not to drive until they could clear debris from the streets. When a hurricane is lumbering their way, state officials have time to get extra personnel in place so they can immediately start on cleanup. That wasn't the case with this storm, known as a derecho ? a straight-line wind storm that sweeps over a large area at high speed.

"Unlike a polite hurricane that gives you three days of warning, this storm gave us all the impact of a hurricane without any of the warning of a hurricane," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said.

With the power out, authorities also warned people to be careful when using generators and candles to help light darkened homes.

Other parts of the country were also sweltering. Denver recorded the hottest June on record. The average temperature for the month was 75 degrees, which was 7.6 degrees above normal. There were 17 days in which the maximum temperature exceeded 90 degrees, including a stretch of five consecutive 100-degree days from June 22-26, the weather service said.

In the Midwest, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued Sunday for the Chicago area, where forecasters said 80 mph winds were possible.

Story: For parts of U.S., a fireworks-free July 4th

The bulk of the eastern storm damage was in West Virginia, Washington and the capital's Virginia and Maryland suburbs. At least six of the dead were killed in Virginia, including a 90-year-old woman asleep in her bed when a tree slammed into her home. Two young cousins in New Jersey were killed when a tree fell on their tent while camping. Two were killed in Maryland, one in Ohio, one in Kentucky and one in Washington.

In Washington's northern Virginia suburbs, emergency 911 call centers were out of service; residents were told to call local police and fire departments. Huge trees toppled across streets in the nation's capital, crumpling cars. Cellphone and Internet service was spotty, gas stations shut down and residents were urged to conserve water.

The power outages were especially dangerous because they left the region without air conditioning in an oppressive heat wave. Temperatures soared to highs in the mid-90s Saturday in Baltimore and Washington, a day after readings of up to 104 degrees were reported in the region.

Yet another day of temperatures reaching 100 degrees was forecast for much of the region Sunday. "It is very unsafe outdoors for those susceptible to these extreme conditions," the National Weather Service warned in a statement.

Three Baltimore City fire companies set to permanently close this week were staying open several more days to help cope.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ordered the National Guard to deliver fuel for generators and fresh water to stricken areas. He reported that power had been restored to such tourist areas as Atlantic City's casinos.

In West Virginia, 232 Amtrak passengers were stranded Friday night on a train blocked on both sides of the tracks by toppled trees.

Brooke Richart, a 26-year-old teacher from New York City, was among the passengers stranded for 20 hours. She read half a book and took walks outside the train, which had light, air conditioning and food the entire time. But she called the wait "trying."

"Thankfully we could go in and out of the train because we were there so long. If you wanted to stretch your legs or take a walk, you could," she said.

Amtrak spokesman Steve Kulm said passengers were taken away by buses Saturday night.

Meanwhile, officials focused on the most vulnerable residents: children, the sick and the elderly.

In Charleston, W.Va., firefighters helped several people using walkers and wheelchairs get to emergency shelters. One of them, David Gunnoe, uses a wheelchair and had to spend the night in the community room of his apartment complex because the power ? and his elevator ? went out. Rescuers went up five floors to retrieve his medication.

Some sought refuge in shopping malls, movie theaters and other places where the air conditioning would be cranked up. Others simply tried to make the best of a bad situation.

In the Columbus, Ohio, suburb of Dublin, Lori Schaffert said her household borrowed a generator from a friend and was alternating it between the refrigerator and freezer while using flashlights and battery-operated lanterns for light. Her 5-year-old daughter and a neighbor friend played board games and helped her make pickles from their garden's cucumbers.

"You come to appreciate the simple life a little more in these times," Schaffert said.

Study reveals moderate doses of alcohol increase social bonding in groups

Monday, July 2, 2012

A new study led by University of Pittsburgh researchers reveals that moderate amounts of alcohol--consumed in a social setting--can enhance positive emotions and social bonding and relieve negative emotions among those drinking.

While it is usually taken for granted that people drink to reduce stress and enhance positive feelings, many studies have shown that alcohol consumption has an opposite effect. In a new paper titled "Alcohol and Group Formation: A Multimodal Investigation of the Effects of Alcohol on Emotion and Social Bonding," research shows that moderate doses of alcohol have a powerful effect on both male and female social drinkers when they are in a group.

The paper will be published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

According to the researchers, previous alcohol studies testing the impact of alcohol on emotions involved social drinkers consuming alcohol in isolation rather than in groups.

"Those studies may have failed to create realistic conditions for studying this highly social drug," said Michael A. Sayette, lead author and professor of psychology in Pitt's Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. "We felt that many of the most significant effects of alcohol would more likely be revealed in an experiment using a social setting."

Sayette and his colleagues assembled various small groups using 720 male and female participants, a larger sample than in previous alcohol studies. Researchers assessed individual and group interactions using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and the Grouptalk model for speech behavior.

They concluded that alcohol stimulates social bonding, increases the amount of time people spend talking to one another, and reduces displays of negative emotions. According to Sayette, the paper introduces into the alcohol literature new measures of facial expression and speech behavior that offer a sensitive and comprehensive assessment of social bonding.

Sayette and eight colleagues took special care in the methods they employed to form the groups. Each participant was randomly assigned to a group of three unacquainted "strangers." Each group was instructed to drink an alcoholic beverage, a placebo, or a nonalcoholic control beverage. Twenty groups representing each gender composition (three males; one female and two males; two males and one female; and three females) were assigned to the three different beverage scenarios. Group members sat around a circular table and consumed three drinks over a 36-minute time span. Each session was video recorded, and the duration and sequence of the participants' facial and speech behaviors were systematically coded frame by frame.

Results showed that alcohol not only increased the frequency of "true" smiles, but also enhanced the coordination of these smiles. In other words, alcohol enhanced the likelihood of "golden moments," with groups provided alcohol being more likely than those offered nonalcoholic beverages to have all three group members smile simultaneously. Participants in alcohol-drinking groups also likely reported greater social bonding than did the nonalcohol-drinking groups and were more likely to have all three members stay involved in the discussion.

"By demonstrating the sensitivity of our group formation paradigm for studying the rewarding effects of alcohol," said Sayette, "we can begin to ask questions of great interest to alcohol researchers? Why does alcohol make us feel better in group settings? Is there evidence to suggest a particular participant may be vulnerable to developing a problem with alcohol?"

The new research sets the stage for evaluation of potential associations between socioemotional responses to alcohol and individual differences in personality, family history of alcoholism, and genetic vulnerability.

Big automakers face deepening European sales slump

PARIS/TURIN (Reuters) - French, Italian and Spanish car sales tumbled in June, rounding off a gloomy first half for Europe's auto industry where even the German market may not escape the effects of grim economic conditions.

Already struggling automakers such as PSA Peugeot Citroen and Fiat suffered as southern European car markets plumbed new lows, according to data published on Monday, a day before German registrations are expected to come in broadly flat.

Industry executives are having to tone down recovery hopes as the crisis deepens, making tentative restructuring moves by Peugeot and General Motors look inadequate and raising pressure on those yet to act.

"We're standing in doo-doo," Fiat Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne told reporters in Turin on Sunday. "Whether you're in an inch of it or three inches doesn't matter, the stench is still overwhelming."

In Germany, where deliveries turned negative in May, rising discounts and automaker self-registrations - selling new cars as used - suggest Europe's biggest market can no longer be relied upon to soften the slump.

"The auto sector crisis is on a European tour," London-based Credit Suisse analyst Erich Hauser said. "Germany is starting to feel the ripple effects."

Italian registrations plunged 24 percent to record the worst June since 1979, manufacturers' association UNRAE said, while French sales slid further toward an expected 10 percent full-year decline.

The Spanish car market also shrank 12 percent as frantic discounting failed to avert a 24th straight monthly fall, according to the country's ANFAC grouping.

"People aren't taking advantage of some of the best offers on record," the association's economist Aranzazu Mur said.

According to an MSI study commissioned by Spanish dealers, full-year auto registrations are likely to fall to a quarter-century low of 720,000 from more than 1.6 million in 2007.

Ford sales halved in Italy, where GM's Opel deliveries fell 44 percent and Fiat's dropped by a quarter, in line with the market. In Spain, the two U.S. automakers posted declines close to 20 percent, while Renault fell 23 percent and Citroen 13 percent.

For the first half, registrations were down 14 percent in France, 20 percent in Italy and 8.2 percent in Spain.

The euro-zone debt crisis and sagging consumer demand are weighing on earnings at mid-market automakers that had already struggled, or failed, to stay profitable in Europe last year.

Ford has blamed Europe for overseas losses expected to have tripled in the second quarter from the $190 million recorded in the first.

Fiat and Peugeot, heavily exposed to the worst affected markets, are also expected to report significant first-half automotive losses in the region later this month.

Only two European car factories are so far earmarked for eventual closure - Peugeot's Aulnay plant near Paris and GM's Opel facility in Bochum, Germany.

Even their immediate decommissioning would barely dent a 7 million-vehicle gap between the region's production capacity and projected output for the next three years, according to an AlixPartners study published last week.

"European production is going to have to adapt to demand in the end," the consulting firm's managing director Laurent Petizon said. "Only then will automakers return to profitability."

Ford's French car registrations dropped 21 percent last month, while Fiat's fell 17 percent and Paris-based Peugeot recorded a 9.5 percent combined sales decline for its two brands at home.

The French market was down just 0.9 percent overall, thanks to an additional day of sales compared with June 2011 and purchases carried over from May - when business was disrupted by a presidential election and public holidays falling on weekdays.

Sales excluding the extra day fell 5.6 percent, France's CCFA industry association said, predicting a full-year market performance "near the bottom end" of its previously forecast 8-10 percent decline.

German incentives are near record highs as the euro zone's persistent debt crisis spooks consumers, according to a monthly index published by the University of Duisberg-Essen's Centre for Automotive Research.

In a rare move by a German premium brand, Daimler's Mercedes plans to offer launch incentives on its new A-Class subcompact, according to an Automobilwoche report.

"May's decline may have marked the turning point for the German market," said Martin Benecke, a Frankfurt-based analyst with IHS Automotive, adding that Fiat and Peugeot were leading the price offensive.

"We're braced for weaker business in the second half," he said.
