Spyware is defined as an advertising method in the form of software that would perform a clandestine installation on your computer without you even knowing it.
There are some kinds of advertising software, though, that can be legally installed on your computer as long as you agree to the licensing agreement ? this kind of marketing software is termed as adware. Permission and knowledge of the user sets spyware and adware apart from each other. Not only can spyware threaten to pry into your personal information and cause all sorts of unwanted ads to pop up, this kind of software can potentially damage your computer, thus the ?popularity? of spyware as a topic among those in the know about computers.
First of all, you have to check your computer ? the first stage of spyware removal is to determine whether it has been infected by spyware. There?s a good chance it is. Some six to seven years ago, America Online and the National Cyber-Security Alliance joined forces to conduct a survey and discovered that about 70% of all users profiled are not aware of the presence of spyware on their computer ? that?s 80% users with some form of spyware multiplied by 90% of them unaware of the harmful programs!
You will know if your computer has been contaminated with spyware in many ways, such as pop-up windows that keep appearing even if you are not connected online. These ads can be extremely annoying to be sure, but spyware can have even more sinister effects to your computer. For instance, it can considerably slow your computer down, add hard to remove toolbars to your browser, change your home page without your knowledge, and cause lock-ups or crashes, resulting in lost data.
The good news is there are a number of spyware removal programs available that will scan your computer to detect spyware elements. If it is determined that your computer is infected with spyware, some of these programs are able to remove the infection.
Be wary of spyware removal programs that allow you to download and install without paying, but require you to pay something in order to patch or update their database of infections. Or you may scan for free, but be asked to pay once the spyware has been detected. Most people are a little skeptical of these programs, and stick to the ones that are entirely free of cost.
You can bank on spyware removal programs as they can get rid of most varieties of spyware. To increase your chances, it is best to run two or even three different programs. One program, after all, may be able to remove one kind of spyware program the other program cannot remove. And in the event the programs may not get rid of everything, you can always go to a computer repair shop or visit Internet tech forums as they may have some useful advice you can apply.
