Italy debt fears reignite after poor auctions (AP)

MILAN ? Italy had to pay sharply higher borrowing rates to entice investors to part with their cash during a couple of auctions Friday, in an acute sign that Europe's crippling debt crisis is laying siege to the eurozone's third-largest economy.

The auction results are another sign that the country's new technocratic government faces a big battle to convince investors that it has a strategy to get a grip on the country's massive debts, and are likely to fuel calls for the European Central Bank to use its firepower to ease a debt crisis that's shown alarming signs of getting much worse this week.

Premier Mario Monti, who replaced Silvio Berlusconi last week, has pledged new austerity measures quickly followed by deeper reforms, and has spent much of his first days in office meeting with European Union officials and the leaders with France and German laying out his plans to get the country's debt burden down.

Italy's debts, which stand at euro1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion), or a huge 120 percent of economic output, are too big for the eurozone's current anti-crisis measures to deal with.

Given the size of its debts, Italy has to continually come to the markets to tap investors for money. The problem arises when the rates it has to pay get so high that the actual debt burden increases ? fueling a potentially-devastating debt spiral.

Friday's auctions indicated that investors are finding it an increasing risk holding onto Italian debt. The country had to pay an average yield of 7.814 percent to raise euro2 billion in two-year bills. That rate was sharply higher on the 4.628 percent it had to pay in the previous auction. And even raising euro8 billion for six months proved exorbitantly expensive. The yield for this auction spiked to 6.504 percent, nearly double the 3.535 percent rate in the last equivalent auction.

Following the grim news on the auction front, the country's borrowing rates in the markets skyrocketed, with the ten-year yield spiking 0.34 percentage point to 7.30 percent ? above the 7 percent threshold that is widely-considered unsustainable in the long-run and eventually proved the point at which Greece, Ireland and Portugal had to seek financial bailouts.

Italy is not alone in the 17-country eurozone in experiencing a disappointing auction this week. Even Germany suffered a flop on Wednesday when it failed to raise all the money it sought, its worst result in decades. Spain too saw its borrowing rates ratchet sharply higher even after a landslide election victory from the conservative Popular Party, which has made getting the country's borrowing levels down its number one priority.

This week's developments have ratcheted up the pressure on the European Central Bank to step up its bond purchases in the markets, though Germany remains adamantly opposed. The current program is designed to support bond prices in the markets, thereby keeping a lid on the borrowing rates.

So far, the ECB has been buying limited amounts of bonds and has to sell an equivalent amount of assets. The ECB said Monday it bought bonds worth only euro4.5 billion last week, down from euro9.5 billion a week earlier.

Potentially, the ECB has unlimited financial firepower through its ability to print money and many countries in the eurozone, including France, have indicated that giving the bank more free reign will help solve the debt crisis.

However, Germany finds the idea of monetizing debts unappealing, warning that it lets the more profligate countries off the hook for their bad practices. In addition, it conjures up bad memories of hyperinflation in Germany in the 1920s.

Monti has pledged to reform the pension system, re-impose a tax on homes annulled by Berlusconi's government, fight tax evasion, streamline civil court proceedings, get more women and youths into the work force, and cut political costs.

While the deeper reforms will take more time, Monti has said the government would decide new austerity measures to address the crisis "in the coming weeks." He has pledged to balance the budget by 2013, something that the EU has said would take additional measures.

EU to urge member states to accept Iranian exiles (AP)

BRUSSELS ? An official says the EU's foreign policy chief will urge the member countries to accept some of the Iranians living in a refugee settlement in Iraq.

Iraq's government has said it will close Camp Ashraf, where more than 3,000 Iranian exiles are living, by the end of the year. The U.N. says at least 34 people were killed when Iraqi security forces raided the camp in April.

The refugees, many of whom seek to overthrow Iran's clerical rulers, were taken in at the camp by Saddam Hussein's regime decades ago.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton will appeal to all 27 members of the bloc next week, asking countries to take in Ashraf residents with ties to them, the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Thursday.

Others may return to Iran.

Sprint sets the date for a CES 'exclusive event'

Sprint CES

Time to start the annual CES speculation, and Sprint's first out of the gate with the special events. As the invite notes, this one's immediately after the Tuesday keynote, which happens to be from Intel's Paul Otellini. We really have no idea what Sprint's got up its sleeve here -- could well be an Intel-based Windows 8 tablet (which in and of itself would be pretty cool), but remember that Intel's also getting into the Android game in 2012, so perhaps we'll get our first look at that fare? Or it could just be that the event's after the keynote and has absolutely nothing to do with Intel. We'll find out in about a month and a half.

BiTMICRO's next-gen SSD controller to deliver blazing speed and big storage in 2012

BiTMICROSSD controllers aren't the most glamorous chunks of silicon to be hawking, but you can make quite a name for yourself with them (just ask SandForce). BiTMICRO is betting that its next-gen platform will be something manufacturers will want in on. Targeted primarily at enterprise class devices, the as yet unnamed chips will be capable of performing 400,000 random write IOPS per second and support drives up to 5TB in size. By comparison, SandForce's SF-2000 tops out at 60,000 IOPS. Others will have time to catch up, though, BiTMICRO says the platform will be ready for "market testing" during the first half of 2012. Check out the PR after the break.

China urges progress on climate change fund (AP)

BEIJING ? China's climate change envoy said Tuesday that global financial woes have put climate issues on the back burner for now, but they have not diminished the need for a multibillion-dollar fund to help developing countries cope with global warming.

Delegates at a U.N.-sponsored climate change conference that starts Nov. 28 in Durban, South Africa, are to consider ways to raise $100 billion a year for the Green Climate Fund.

Xie Zhenhua, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission and China's lead climate official, told a news conference in Beijing that some countries may not be able to pledge as much as originally planned but he hopes there will be progress in determining how the fund is allocated and managed in the long-term.

China is also pushing for new emissions-reduction targets for developed countries to take effect after the 1997 Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.

Countries generally have fallen into camps of rich and poor on the issue. Developing countries insist the Kyoto obligations ? the individual targets for countries to cut emissions ? be extended and new targets adopted. Industrial countries say they want emerging economies to accept similar binding commitments.

Xie reiterated China's stance that developed countries are mainly to blame for the current global warming situation and must take the lead in combatting the problem, while developing countries should not have to face mandatory restraints on emissions because they would hamper efforts to alleviate poverty.

A white paper on China's climate change policies distributed at the news conference said clarifying a new emissions-reduction plan for developed countries was the most urgent task facing negotiators at Durban.

Also important will be securing "new, additional and abundant funds" for developing nations to deal with global warming, it said.

"Climate change hasn't become less important because of the international financial crisis, but it has become less prominent," Xie said. "Some people say that given the economic difficulties in Western countries these days, that it's not the proper time to discuss financing issues."

Xie said China understands that point of view but also believes global economic difficulties are temporary and that progress should be made at Durban on establishing the financing mechanisms for the fund. He said there are multiple options for financing but that the main source will be public funds from developed countries.

"If you have difficulties, for instance, you can donate less money, but the mechanism should be there and we hope, we look forward to positive progress in the allocation and management of these long-term financing mechanisms (in Durban)," Xie said.

China and other emerging economies exempted from the Kyoto pact have sharply increased emissions in recent years, while rejecting calls to commit by treaty to restraints on emissions.

However, China has voluntarily set a target of reducing power consumed per unit of economic output ? a measure known as "energy intensity" ? by 40 percent to 45 percent by 2020, compared with 2005 levels, while also increasing the share of energy produced by renewable sources to 15 percent and expanding forest cover.

(AP) ? Security forces fired tear gas and clashed Monday with several thousand protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square in the third straight day of violence that has killed at least 24 people and has turned into the most sustained challenge yet to the rule of Egypt's military.

Throughout the day, young activists demanding the military hand over power to a civilian government skirmished with black-clad police, hurling stones and firebombs and throwing back the tear gas canisters being fired by police into the square, which was the epicenter of the protest movement that ousted President Hosni Mubarak in February.

The night before saw an escalation of the fighting as police launched a heavy assault that tried and failed to clear protesters from the square. In a show of the ferocity of the assault, the death toll leaped from Sunday evening until Monday morning. A constant stream of injured protesters ? bloodied from rubber bullets or overcome by gas ? were brought into makeshift clinics set out on sidewalks around the square where volunteer doctors scrambled from patient to patient.

The eruption of violence, which began Saturday, reflects the frustration and confusion that has mired Egypt's revolution since Mubarak fell and the military stepped in to take power.

It comes only a week before Egypt is to begin the first post-Mubarak parliamentary elections, which many have hoped would be a significant landmark in a transition to democracy.

Instead, the vote has been overshadowed by mounting anger at the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which will continue to hold power even after the vote. Activists accuse the generals of acting increasingly in the same autocratic way as Mubarak's regime and fear that they will dominate the coming government, just as they have the current interim one they appointed months ago.

The military says it will hand over power only after presidential elections, which it has vaguely said will be held in late 2012 or early 2013. The protesters are demanding an immediate move to civilian rule.

"What does it mean, transfer power in 2013? It means simply that he wants to hold on to his seat," said a young protester, Mohammed Sayyed, referring to the head of the Supreme Council, Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi.

Sayyed held two rocks, ready to throw, as he took cover from tear gas in a side street off Tahrir. His head was bandaged from what he said was a rubber bullet that hit him earlier Monday.

"I will keep coming back until they kill me," he said. "The people are frustrated. Nothing changed for the better."

An Egyptian morgue official said the toll had climbed to 24 dead since the violence began Saturday ? a jump from the toll of five dead around nightfall Sunday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the numbers. Hundreds have been injured, according to doctors in the square.

At the makeshift field clinics around Tahrir Square, medical volunteers rushed between injured protesters staggering in, or being carried in by comrades. Most of the clinics were simply a partitioned-off sections of sidewalk.

Mohammed Mustafa, a doctor at the main clinic set up inside a nearby mosque, said his site alone was treating an average of 80 cases an hour and that many of the wounded did not want to be taken to hospital because they feared arrest. He and other doctors said most of the injured had breathing and eye problems and wounds to the face from rubber bullets. A number of protesters have lost eyes from rubber bullet hits since Saturday.

During the overnight assault, police hit one of the field clinics with heavy barrages of tear gas, forcing the staff to flee, struggling to carry out the wounded. Some were moved to a nearby sidewalk outside a Hardees fast food restaurant. A video posted on social networking sites showed a soldier dragging the motionless body of a protester along the street and leaving him in a garbage-strewn section of Tahrir.

As the violence raged, the military council issued a long-awaited anti-graft law that bans anyone convicted of corruption from running for office or holding a government post.

The timing of the move suggested it was an attempt to placate protesters. But the law falls far short of demands by many that all members of Mubarak's former ruling party be banned from politics.

The interim government also said Monday it was seeking to replace culture minister Emad Abu Ghazi, who submitted his resignation Sunday to protest the Cabinet's response to Tahrir clashes, MENA reported.

Protesters also marched Monday other cities, including thousands of students in the coastal city of Alexandria. calling for those responsible for the violence in Cairo to be punished.

The protesters' suspicions about the military were fed by a proposal issued by the military-appointed Cabinet last week that would shield the armed forces from any civilian oversight and give the generals veto power over legislation dealing with military affairs. It would also give them considerable power over the body that is to be created after the election to draft a new constitution.

At the same time, there are deep concerns the election will bring little democratic change. Many worry that stalwarts of Mubarak's ruling party could win a significant number of seats in the next parliament because the military did not ban them from running for public office as requested by activists.

Many also believe that whoever wins the election, the military will continue to wield its domination over the next government. The current civilian government has been little more than a facade for the military, activists say. It has done little to bring about economic and political reform and has stood unable ? or unwilling ? to act as woes have mounted in Egypt.

On Monday, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called on Egypt's rulers to listen to the protesters.

"Those in charge in Egypt would be well advised to take people's political demands and justified concerns seriously and act fast to create the right environment for the upcoming elections," Westerwelle said.

He called on all sides to refrain from violence so the upcoming election can be held in "a peaceful environment" and dispatched his Middle East envoy to Cairo.

Over recent months, security around the country has fallen apart, with increased crime, sectarian violence and tribal disputes. The economy has badly deteriorated. Because of the weekend violence, Egypt's main stock index fell for a second straight day Monday, and airport officials reported a sharp drop Monday in international passenger arrivals ? a further blow to the country's crucial tourism industry, which is one of the top foreign currency earners.

One of the most prominent democracy proponents in the country, Nobel Peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei, called on the civilian government to resign and for a national unity government to be formed "grouping all the factions so it can begin to solve the problems of Egyptians."

"Power is now in the hands of the military council, which is not qualified to run the country, and the government, which has no authority," he said on a TV political talk show late Sunday. For the next six months, "we want see the powers of the military council given completely to a civilian, national unity government, and the military goes back to just defending the borders."

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces issued a statement Sunday night, saying it does not intend to "extend the transitional period and will not permit by any means hindering the process of democratic transition."

The military-backed Cabinet said the elections, due to start on Nov. 28, will go ahead as scheduled.

Activists have been holding occasional protests against the military in Tahrir for months, and some have triggered crackdowns by the military or police.

This weekend's violence was the most sustained fighting between the two sides. It began when security forces stormed a sit-in at Tahrir staged by several hundred protesters wounded in clashes during the 18-day uprising in January and February and frustrated by the slow pace of bringing those responsible to justice.

"The people had a revolution to live a better life, but look at everything," said 47-year-old Fayez Mohammed, his eyes red from tear gas. He pointed to rising prices, street violence and lack of accountability against members of Mubarak's regime.

"Our main demand is a date. When are you leaving power?" he said. "And don't say, 'Whenever God wills.'"

(AP) ? It's tough to keep a pregnancy a secret when you're in the public eye, and for a while, Beyonce thought the jig was up.

"The whole time I definitely was thinking, 'Everyone knows, everyone can see,'" said the singer before the screening of her new concert DVD Sunday in New York.

It became particularly difficult for her to hide the growing baby bump when the Grammy-winner performed for four nights to sold-out crowds at New York's Roseland Theater in August.

"When you're pregnant, it's a little bit harder to breathe, so it was hard doing all the choreography and singing at the same time," said the 30-year-old singer in an onstage interview.

Fans who didn't get a chance to catch "The Intimate Nights" shows ? what Beyonce said was her last concert performance of the year ? can get a behind-the-scenes look in her new "Live at Roseland" DVD, available exclusively at Walmart this week. The deluxe two-DVD set is available everywhere on 11/29.

Along with classics from her Destiny's Child days and major hits from her solo career, the DVD includes interviews with the singer, home footage of rehearsals and special family moments ? even shots of Beyonce in a wedding gown.

She's also hoping the film will serve as a time capsule for her unborn child, a chance for him or her to say, "I can't believe I was in that belly," she said.

Video: Panda census a bear of a task

>>> finally tonight, they're cute, they're cuddly, they're adorable and they're endangered. but in order to increase the panda population, first you have to figure out how many actually live in the wild. how do you do that? with a panda census, of course. and nbc's adrian mog is on the trail.

>> reporter: they're unique, a national treasure native only to a small part of china, an area the size of connecticut. they're also one of the most endangered animals in the world, so much so that china holds a panda census every ten years. this time, it kicks off in sichuan , one of three provinces the giant panda makes its own. here, 70 trackers will spend the next two years surveying the bears' natural habitat . we followed one of them on his assignment up a steep and slippery mountain slope. he took part in the last census. he said new technology like the gps device has helped cut down his time in the field by a third. look, bamboo. giant pandas love this, so we must be getting close. but we didn't see any wild pandas. they're too rare. only 1600 according to the last census. nevertheless, there is still information to be gathered. what people normally care about is the number of pandas, says this scientist. but we also care about the conditions of their habitat. with this data, we can draw more effective conservation policies. the biggest threat to the panda is still humans. sichuan , one of the most populous provinces, is urbanizing rapidly. but the panda, especially in captivity, is also threatened by its own mating habits. so scientists focus their efforts on breeding centers. earlier this year, a landmark birth of a dozen cubs. it was a milestone with the number of pandas in captivity around the world reached 300, says this scientist at a breeding center. researchers hope the new census will reveal another milestone, that breeding programs and conservation efforts have been on the right track, producing more national treasures. adrian mog, nbc news, sichuan , china.

PFT: Fox regrets comments about Tebow

Earlier this year, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo broke a rib, left the game, returned to the game, and pulled out a come-from-behind victory in overtime, giving the 49ers their only loss of the year.? After the game, reports surfaced that Romo suffered a punctured lung, too.? Despite those injuries, Romo didn?t miss a game, thanks in part to some potent pain mediation.

Last week, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick broke a rib on the second play of the game (if we believe Eagles coach Andy Reid), never left the game, apparently didn?t suffer a punctured lung, but won?t be playing on Sunday night against the Giants.

So why won?t Vick be playing? ?The Eagles haven?t offered an explanation, and we don?t expect one.

That forces me to speculate as to the possible reasons. ?(Well, it doesn?t force me to. ?But I will anyway.)

First, it could be that the doctors fear that the rib will break off and puncture an organ.

Second, it could be that the pain is so intense that not even a shot to numb the area will make a difference.

Third, it could be that Vick simply can?t tolerate the pain.

Fourth, it could be that Vick doesn?t perform as well when he?s shot full of pain medication.

Fifth, it could be that coach Andy Reid didn?t want to put Vick at risk of further injury against a zealous and potent Giants? defense.

Sixth, it could be that Reid senses there?s no way that the Eagles would win with an impaired Vick, so Reid is taking his chances with Vince Young.

Absent more information, there will be plenty of speculation that Vick simply isn?t as tough as Romo. ?I don?t believe that ? but others surely do, based simply on the fact that Romo played with broken ribs, and Vick didn?t.

This is The Heroine

Image

She's a Cute, but extremely shy 'geek' who doesn't like to show off her body. She does enjoy being clean, and orderly though. Her fashion sense is...lacking.

Then there's her sister. The other Heroine.

Image

She's Outgoing with others, and relaxed when it comes to work and situations. She likes to show off, whether it be her skills, or her looks, outfits, and body.

Both of them aren't the sexiest girls in the schools, just to make clear...They weren't as...'Gifted' as other girls in certain places? The second sister actually scares some guys, the first sister almost faints when she has to talk to- scratch that do ANYTHING with a boy she finds cute. The second sister also comes up with all the schemes, and leaves the first to do all the technical stuff and hard work.

And then there's their true forms.

Image

The two are actually Princesses of a planet known as filled with various types of alien people. They come from a long line of humanoids with Cat-like abilities, such as agility, speed, Night Vision Eyesight, and cutting/slashing with their bare hands, even if their nails are trimmed, and strength just over that of a peak human.

They were born to an evil set of annoying parents who planned to give them crushing levels of work and school lessons to keep them in line, despite actually being very nice every other moment, and running a kingdom revered for its fair government. Instead, the girls had escaped from the planet as babies, narrowly avoiding their first math lesson at the age of 1.

They crash landed on Earth, where they crawled out out their spaceship, and were adopted by a young woman who was actually a ninja, and a sleazy one at that, constantly getting drunk, and going to parties, being a total slacker. She took them in, at first thinking they were hers after getting knocked up, but after learning the truth, she loved the two dearly, realizing it was a gift from the heavens, and a message to 'straighten the hell out' as quoted by the lady herself. For years, she taught the two her 'Ninja Magic,' including stealth, escape, etc and such. for everything else, she taught them 'Reikijutsu' martial arts to give them some melee skills, and control their inner energy (or 'Ki'), so they could heal, and blow shit up. The first sister became the 'Jyuusei' or Gentle girl, Excelling at healing and the internal system. The second sister became the 'Gousei' or Girl of Might, mastering her energy to use energy blasts, cause explosions, etc, all due to the fact she watched too much TV.

One day, the two sisters would discover their originally intended forms as members of the Neko-Jin Species, as beautiful, buxom young ladies who could put all the girls in town to shame, at the same time gaining even more strength, speed, and agility than before, gaining the amazing power of the Mega Kitty. Donning costumes that don't really do much other than make them look hotter, they are forced to do battle with their parents, who have arrived on Earth, leaving the girls' uncle in charge. The vile legal guardians have hired a mad scientist to create mutants and cyborgs, nicknamed 'Kaijin' who're ordered to defeat the girls and take them home by any means. Naturally, the girls don't want to go back, especially when they realize how much they like Earth, with all its culture, food, fun, and boys. So they just fight, stating the monsters are here to 'destroy/conquer/etc Earth,' under the guise of the Kunoichi Kitties, C and D. They may also use their true forms for other, non monster fighting business. But they must be careful: at any time they could become normal again, and possibly humiliate themselves somehow. (And it'd all probably be the second sister's fault.)

Image

Along the way they'll meet other local 'Choujin' (Super Beings) like themselves, including The Ryuujin Bros, Panzer Blitz, and the legendary Shin Kojin, who are forced to help them fight off the invaders to protect Earth. AP source: NBA owners hold conference call (AP)

NEW YORK ? NBA owners held a conference call Thursday to receive an update on the lockout, a person with knowledge of the details said.

Also Thursday, the antitrust lawsuit filed by players in California was reassigned to U.S. District Judge Samuel Conti. The first case management conference has been scheduled for March 9.

Though that would be too late to save the season, the sides could request the date to be moved up, or they could settle before it ever got that point. Attorney David Boies, representing players in an antitrust lawsuit against the league in California, said he hoped it wouldn't be necessary to litigate the case all the way through.

Representatives for the players have also said the league could let the players return while negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement continued, though that seems unlikely.

The players' association disbanded Monday, and players filed two lawsuits Tuesday, one each in California and Minnesota.

The conference call involving the league's Board of Governors was not in response to the litigation, but rather a planned update on the status of the collective bargaining negotiations, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the details were to be kept private.

Michael Lohan Basically Off the Hook in Domestic Battery Case

We often talk about how Lindsay Lohan escapes with pitifully short sentences for her numerous crimes, but she's treated like a serial killer compared to her dad.

Despite allegedly beating up ex-girlfriend Kate Major last month, repeatedly violating her restraining order against him, then contacting her while out on bail and resisting arrest, MiLo was not sentenced to jail time yesterday.

He got probation and rehab. Way to go, legal system!

Michael Lohan in Jail

Lohan pleaded no contest to four misdemeanors related to an incident at Kate's apartment, in which he allegedly got violent when she refused to provide oral relief.

In exchange for no contest pleas, Lindsay's dastardly dad was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to spend four months at a residential treatment center.

He was also ordered to complete a domestic violence batterer’s intervention program and banned from all contact with Kate ... as if he pays attention to such orders.

Not to make Lindsay Lohan out to be a victim here, but her crimes have all been non-violent offenses and she's at least required to show up in jail for a few hours.

If they had room to accommodate her, she might even be there right now. And yet MiLo goes free after his track record? It doesn't make any sense to us. You?

aTV Flash (black) leaves beta, grants your Apple TV media-playing super powers

aTV Flash (black)
We're definitely of the opinion that the dedicated devs who do all the heavy lifting so you can tweak and hack your pile of gadgets deserve a little something for their troubles. That being said, Firecore's aTV Flash (black) is still going to be a tough sell at $30 (now that it's left beta). But, before you go, perhaps you'd like to know what that chunk of cash will enable your 2nd-gen Apple TV to do. For one, it blesses Cupertino's hobby set-top with an all new media player that can open AVI, MKV, MP4, ISO and host of other file formats. There's also an HTML5 browser for surfing the web and streaming media. Want more apps? How about a Plex client and Last.FM radio? Perhaps best of all, though, it allows you to play back files stored on a PC, Mac or NAS without the need for iTunes. Check out the video demo after the break.
