Dexter, Season 7

Every week in Slate?s Dexter TV club, Katy Waldman will have an IM conversation with a different Dexter fan. This week, she rehashes episode 7.1 with Torie Bosch, editor of Future Tense at Slate.

As Season 7 opens, Dexter has just dispatched Travis Marshall, aka the Doomsday Killer?but there?s a catch. His adoptive sister Debra, newly appointed lieutenant of Miami Homicide, saw him commit the murder. Even worse, she witnessed the crime after suddenly realizing that she might harbor romantic feelings for her brother. In Episode 1, Dexter tries to convince Deb not to report him, even as he struggles to conceal his true nature as a serial killer.

Torie Bosch: I've got my rubber apron on. Let's do this thing.

Katy Waldman: One tension that I kept feeling during the episode was: How much was Dexter faking in his scenes with Debra? Was his shock and fear a performance, or was it a genuine reaction to getting caught?

Bosch: I am consistently confused by how much Dexter is supposed to feel. Early on, we were told that he only fakes feelings. But through the last several seasons, we've seen him feel genuine emotions, apparently. The flashback to Deb being forced to give up Banjo the puppy?her father worried that Dexter would kill it?suggested to me that he was indeed feeling empathy?then and in the present.

Waldman: Yes! And the scenes in which he gazes soulfully at Harrison. He seems to feel real love for his son.

Bosch: Of course, with Debra, his empathy and consternation were quite self-serving: He wanted to convince her not to turn him in.

Waldman: Right. I was especially struck by the third (I think?) time Deb confronted Dex about Travis. She was grilling him about why he had a change of clothes and he was struggling to think of a reply. So he started saying very kind/remorseful things: "You sound stressed." ?I didn?t mean for you to be involved.? I think we were supposed to see how much of his brotherly feeling was just stalling. It was a dark moment for the character.

Bosch: The kind words were also inappropriate for the situation. Those are the things you say when you ask someone to, say, drive 45 minutes to bring you the keys you forgot.

Waldman: Wait. What are you supposed to say in Dexter?s position?

Bosch: Whenever I am asking someone to help me cover up a crime, I try to convey that I understand the magnitude of the situation. It's just polite, I think. To take it back a few steps, how do you think that last season's storyline of Debra-loves-Dex influenced her reaction to her discovery?both of Travis' body, and then that he was not a novice at this murder thing?

Waldman: I thought the show's writers may have seen that plot thread as a nonstarter. They seem to be walking it back a bit this season.

Bosch: It seemed weird to me that they built that story line up and then dropped it so suddenly. Particularly when this season is supposed to open seconds after the last one ended. What do you think of what appears to be our major crime story line for this season?the Eastern European syndicate?

?Waldman: The show is going international! Echoes of Homeland! The accents and the Ukrainian prostitutes ... it seemed a bit clich?d.

Bosch: Totally. Times like this, I miss Trinity/John Lithgow. Now there was a criminal I wanted to watch. However, I did welcome the opportunity for detective Quinn to utter what ought to become an immortal line?when he called their dead girl "a ghost in a G-string."?Now I know what I'll be for Halloween this year.

Waldman: Speaking of Trinity, I thought it was interesting how reliant this episode was on the earlier seasons. Debra has flashbacks to the ice-truck killer and starts digging through old evidence. LaGuerta and Matsuka discuss Sgt. Doakes from Season 2. I appreciate all the layers (they make the world of Dexter feel more complete!), but I do wonder about first-time viewers. Do you think the show?s accessible enough to newcomers? I mean, I like to imagine thousands of new Dexter converts every fall, so.

Bosch: I wonder how much showrunners even take that into consideration now?they may expect that newcomers will first binge on prior seasons. Speaking of LaGuerta, I hope that she's in vicious mode this season. I hate it when she is gentle.

Waldman: She had some welcome bitchiness towards Deb, I thought. And she had that line, "You're the hero," which aside from being totally ironic evoked Rudy's warning to Dexter: You can't be a killer and a hero. I feel like that's a big question in the show. Can being a "good" killer make you a hero? This season seems much more pessimistic than some of the others, especially with law-abiding Deb spotlighted as a foil for Dex.

Bosch: My fear is that we'll end up seeing Debra and Dexter become partners in crime?that she will convert to his form of vigilantism.

Waldman: Wow. That's an interesting thought. In a way he's much more stable in his psychopathy than she is in her normalcy.

Bosch: Right! Because for him, it's about the kill. Harry's "code" is, at its heart, about not being caught. Debra wants justice. Her motives are purer?and probably, therefore, corruptible.

Bosch: ?In the last couple of seasons, the show has lost its subtlety. It was a neat trick to set it up so Debra is implicated if she turns Dexter in, because she helped cover up Travis? murder.

Waldman: Right?it?s like the show is as manipulative with our fandom as Dexter is with Deb?s affection. One of the great pleasures of the early seasons was our sense of being let in on a secret, being complicit with Dexter. Now I feel, as a viewer, like one of the duped police officers.

Bosch: Is there recovery from here?

Waldman: I hope so! There will always be flashes of Dexter brilliance. But It?s really hard to sustain any show for seven seasons!

Bosch: And yet ... I'll watch. Maybe only to see where they take this Doakes/LaGuerta thing. The Doakes season was one of my favorites.

Waldman: Absolutely. And to follow the Quinn/Batista bromance ?

Bosch: And Matsuka! The more bored I get with Dexter ... the more I love that little dirtball.

Waldman: I can't join you in that love, I'm afraid. But I do like him better than his creepy intern, Louis. I wonder what he's up to.

Bosch: Dexter always needs a nemesis. Louis must be it this go-round.

Waldman: Oy. Not sure that seems like a fair fight. I hate to say it, but I think both the show and Dexter are getting a bit sloppy. Dropping slides, leaving shreds of plastic wrap on feet ?

Bosch: Yes?in fact, I wondered briefly whether his decision to murder someone in the airport was almost a cry for help, him asking to be caught. It reminded me of Breaking Bad, when Walt reams Jesse out for driving a meth lab to an airport. But Dexter is meticulous, not thoughtless.

Waldman: Interesting! I thought they just liked the symbolism of Dexter surrounded by tons of baggage. Hey, I want you to know I would never go into your side of the apartment and cancel all your credit cards.

Bosch: That was the weirdest revenge ever. He?s a badass hacker and that's the best he can do?

Waldman: Oh, he's got a grand plan. I'm excited to see where it goes. You think he knows Dexter?s secret?

Bosch: Couldn?t tell you, but it would be funny if that worm succeeds where Doakes the former SEAL failed. Listen. My victim is starting to wake up. I?ve gotta go.

Waldman: Cool. See you at the station tomorrow. I?ll bring donuts.

Monday: What other writers and Slate commenters thought about Episode 1.

Crowley in the Ottawa Citizen, Calgary Herald & Vancouver Sun: CEOs only have eyes for China

September 29, 2012 ? In his latest column published in the Ottawa Citizen, Calgary Herald and Vancouver Sun, MLI?s Brian Lee Crowley cautions Canadian CEOs to not only have eyes for China. An excerpt below:

It is time for them, and us, to do what the CEOs professed to admire so much about the Chinese: to think about our interests in terms of centuries, not quarters. If we do, we will follow the sage advice of another speaker: not to act as supplicants grateful for crumbs, but to maintain the leverage that our coveted natural resources and other advantages give us.

?

CEOs only have eyes for China

By Brian Lee Crowley, Ottawa Citizen, September 29, 2012

East is east and west is west, wrote Rudyard Kipling, and never the twain shall meet.

Clearly dear old Rudyard was never exposed to the Canadian business class hot on the scent of Chinese profits.

The twain appeared to meet with a vengeance at an Ottawa conference put on several days ago by the Canadian Council of Chief Executives on Canada in the Asian century. Clearly Canada?s CEOs never met a Chinese business opportunity they did not want to embrace. And yet these titans of our business world weren?t listening to what was being said at their own conference.

Speaker after speaker sounded important qualifications and dangers about the opportunities offered by Asia.

One of the most important was the observation that Asia was not a single thing, country, opportunity, or danger. India and Indonesia, Vietnam and even Japan were only some of the Asian economies and societies repeatedly singled out, for instance, for the opportunities they offered.

The CEOs in the room only had eyes for China.

Speakers told them the U.S. business class, five years ago equally bedazzled by China, is increasingly disillusioned. ?Nobody makes money in China? is now their mantra, and while you are struggling to establish yourself in their market, your Chinese partners are often helping themselves to your intellectual property and showing you the door when they?re done.

Our business leaders clearly thought that nothing like that would happen to us nice Canadians. One of them assured the audience that if only we came to know the Chinese as he has, we too would learn to trust them.

Hmmm.

Are we talking about the same Chinese with thousands of missiles pointed at Taiwan, who turn out large, militantly chauvinistic mobs at the drop of a hat to denounce neighbours whose behaviour the regime disapproves of, and who have been repeatedly exposed as engaged in military and industrial espionage on a large scale, including in Canada?

Is this the same China whose ambassador to Canada threatened us recently that if we didn?t approve of a Chinese state-owned company?s bid for Nexen, a Canadian energy company, that we ?wouldn?t be able to do business together?? The same China that ruthlessly and insouciantly throws peasants off land they have been farming for generations with little or no compensation because their presence has become inconvenient for Communist Party apparatchiks?

The same China whose belligerent behaviour in Asia has driven most small and medium-sized Asian countries to beg the United States to increase its military and other commitments in the region to counter-balance this overweening behemoth? The China that executes more people every year than any other country in the world?

I feel more warm and fuzzy already.

Speaking of the United States, our business leaders were also reminded that China and the United States, while clearly sharing many interests, are also locked in a power struggle. This is not the first time, after all, that a dominant world power has faced a resurgent nation bitter at its treatment by a world adjudged hostile and exploitative. China has lots to complain about regarding its treatment by western powers and their allies over the last two centuries. But one of the reasons that such rises frequently end in tears is that the rising power is wont to cast aside the ?corrupt? system that ?kept us down.?

That system would include, say, the regime of collective security that for decades has guaranteed the peace and freedom of western nations and their allies against external threats; America?s role as the guarantor of freedom of the seas; the rule of law and much more. China thinks these institutions are hostile to its interests. Canada and the U.S., in common with the vast bulk of responsible nations, see them as bulwarks of international order and prosperity. Out of this will arise unavoidable and repeated conflicts. Best to think now about how to limit the damage. Hint: not by heedlessly throwing in our lot with the Chinese.

The CEOs spent most of their time whistling past the graveyard. To the warning of one of the conference?s distinguished speakers that Canada needs at all costs to avoid being caught between the U.S. and China, between our largest market and the fastest growing, most appeared to feel the correct response was to hope they had misheard.

They hadn?t.

China respects strength and resolve. So should we.

Russia says backing Syrian rebels deepens strife, says Moscow demands comprehensive cease-fire

The Russian foreign minister is lashing out at countries that are backing opposition groups fighting to overthrow the dictatorship of Syria's Bashar Assad, saying that was 'pushing Syria even deeper into internecine strife.

Russia, Syria's primary backer, and China have blocked three attempts by Western governments to pass United Nations Security Council resolutions that would impose sanctions on the Assad regime.

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian diplomat, told the U.N. General Assembly that the fighting in Syria, which has killed more than 30,000 people, must end through a comprehensive cease-fire, release of prisoners and humanitarian aid. He said Russia backs the efforts of special U.N. envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to end the fighting. He said the number of war crimes is growing both by the Assad regime and the opposition fighters.

Mysterious Android tablet shows up in North Korea

North Korean tablet

Yes, you read that correctly; a tablet was spotted presumably running Android in North Korea's capital of Pyongyang. The photo was taken during a trade fair where various approved electronics were being shown off.

Due to the closed nature of North Korea, we don't know much about the tablet. No hardware specs, no software information and certainly no dates for availability. One of the only tidbits that was discovered was a box in the background that read Samjiyo, which is the name of another North Korean tablet introduced in June.

From the photo, it looks to have around a 10-inch screen and has some applications installed. Other than that, it's anybody's guess. If we were to surmise about a North Korean tablet, we'd assume it's extremely locked down and will not run Google's core services. Remember North Koreans are prohibited access to the wider Internet. Interestingly enough, it seems as though the Seoul Google office took interest in this photo as well and are trying to find out more information, just as we are.

There's a certain irony in a closed nation like North Korea being able to develop its own tablet because of an open-source OS like Android, don'tcha think?

US banks hit by more than a week of cyberattacks

U.S. banks have been buffeted by more than a week of powerful cyberattacks, but the mystery surrounding their perpetrators lingers.

One expert said Friday that he was suspicious of claims of responsibility purportedly made by Islamists angry at an anti-Muslim movie made in the United States, explaining that the widely-circulated Internet postings might have been an attempt to deflect attention from the true culprit.

"In the intelligence world, we call that a 'false flag,'" said Mike Smith, whose Web security company Akamai has helped analyze some of the attacks.

The postings, published to the Web earlier this month, suggested that an obscure Islamist group had taken revenge on American financial institutions for the "Innocence of Muslims," a low-budget U.S. film that ridiculed Muhammad, revered by Muslims as the last of God's prophets.

Since then at least half a dozen banks ? including the Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Citigroup ? have witnessed traffic surges and disruptions. Not all have confirmed they were the victims of an online onslaught, but such surges are a hallmark of denial-of-service attacks, which work by drowning target websites with streams of junk data.

Such attacks are fairly common and generally don't compromise sensitive data or do any lasting damage. Still, they can be a huge headache for companies that rely on their websites to interact with customers.

Most say the recent spate of attacks has been unusually powerful. PNC bank, which was hit on Thursday, has never seen such a strong surge in traffic, spokesman Fred Solomon said in a telephone interview. Smith said he estimated the flow of data at 60 to 65 gigabits per second.

Smith said the profile and power of the attack made it an unlikely fit for the religious youth that the Internet postings called upon to join in the anti-U.S. campaign. He explained that politically-motivated hackers ? often called hacktivists ? usually flood the Web with appeals for support and post links to software that can turn followers' personal computers into crude cyberweapons.

Twitter and online chat rooms then explode with activity, as casual supporters pile in to coordinate attacks.

"You're not seeing that with this particular set of attacks," Smith said. "At the same time ... the attack traffic is fairly homogeneous. It's not this wide cornucopia of attacks that's coming at you that you see with a hacktivist attack."

So who is behind the campaign?

Cybercriminals often use denial-of-service attacks to shake down smaller websites, but major U.S. banks make unlikely targets for a protection racket.

Could a state actor be at play? U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman, without offering any proof, said he believed the assaults were carried out by Iran in retaliation for tightened economic sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies.

Smith demurred when asked who could be behind the campaign, although he said there were "only a handful of groups out there that have the technical ability or incentive" to carry it out.

In any case, the online attacks appeared to be easing. Solomon, the PNC bank spokesman, said while traffic remained heavy Friday the flow was gradually returning to normal.

Doug Johnson, with the American Bankers Association, echoed that assessment.

"I believe it's tapering off," he said.

Getting Exposure for Your Home-Based Business | Business 2 ...

Starting a business from home can be tough. Even after you?ve figured out how things are going to run, you have to deal with any hiccups that happen, and trust me; hiccups will happen. You also have to wade into the wonderful world of marketing, which can be really difficult to navigate without the right tools. Here are some tips on how to get exposure for your at-home business

Events

Even if your business is based online, you can use your local community as a great resource. People want to support local businesses even if they do business in other regions as well.

You can get booths at local carnivals, fairs, business and job fairs, farmer?s markets, and many other big local events. Think of anywhere you have seen businesses networking and trying to get customers, and follow suit.

Contact event coordinators to see about getting represented. Some events may charge you. Events put on by not-for-profits or city organizations such as libraries probably won?t unless it?s for charity.

When it comes to event time, make sure you have a nice display with business cards and other freebies to hand out to people. Be friendly and engaging so that they?re more likely to remember you.

Start an email list for people to get more information, but don?t be surprised if a lot of people unsubscribe. Email inboxes are becoming a catch-all for advertisements that never get read.

Local Partners

Many businesses put out newsletters of local partners. You might have to pay to be included, but you might not. Some businesses might keep your business cards on display in exchange for the same. You can also offer services to local businesses. They want to network just as much as you do, so you may be able to build some mutually beneficial relationships. Never give up an opportunity to meet people and talk up your business.

Strong Online Presence

If you are holed up in your house all day, perhaps the most accessible and affordable marketing you can do is online. It is essential for almost any business wanting to be successful today to have a strong online presence. There are many ways to establish and maintain one.

Of course, the best way to start building your professional online presence is to build your website. This will be the foundation of your online presence. Once your business has a website, you can link back to it in directories, from social media profiles, and put it on promotion materials.

Be sure that your website is easily navigated. If people can?t find anything, they will get frustrated and leave. Make sure that outbound links open a new window or tab, not lead away from your page.

The information on your website needs to be clear, concise, and useful. Make sure you have hours, product information, deals, and updates on your site. This should be an easy place for people to find information about your company.

It is important to have consistent updates to your website. This could be difficult if your hours and products are static, so it is a good idea to start a blog. Write about recent news updates and innovations in your field. Keep your posts relevant and professional and make sure that they will be interesting to potential clients. Post on a regular basis. If you have trouble finding time, write a bunch of posts at once and then queue the posts so that you can have consistent updates.

In order to get traffic to your website, you need to show up in the search engines. The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) industry is booming, so there are a lot of companies out there that you can go to in order to get help with promoting your website. If you cannot afford an SEO company however, you can get a good start on your own if you are informed. Find a reliable SEO blog?to learn about the latest practices and relevant news to the SEO field.

There are a lot of ways to gain exposure for your home-based business. The important thing is to do your research and put the same quality and effort into your behind-the-scene tasks as you give to your clients. This consistency will help you build a stronger business as well as a reputation for a great work ethic.

How to Get Unstuck: The Big Paper Experiment [Productivity]

How to Get Unstuck: The Big Paper ExperimentIf you ever find yourself stuck and unclear of where you are and where you're going, try the following exercise to get moving again. All you need is a pen or pencil and two sheets of paper.

  1. Find some paper. The bigger, the better.
  2. Write out what you are doing, who you are doing it for, and why you are doing it. Be brutally honest.
  3. Take a good look at the paper. Don't do anything but look at it and reflect on what you've written. In fact, drink a cup of tea or coffee while doing so, and don't do anything else until you have drank the last drop.
  4. Start crossing out the stuff that doesn't resonate with you on some level that is deeper than "I have to do this". If you look at all of the criteria, you can avoid the "have to" items and get to the "want to" items.
  5. Take the items that you crossed out and write them down on a piece of paper. The smaller the paper, the better.
  6. Take the items you didn't cross out and write them down on a piece of paper. The bigger the paper, the better.
  7. Compare the two pieces of paper. While doing this, you should (hopefully) realize that the smaller stuff shouldn't get in the way of the bigger stuff. The small paper represents stuff of little import, the big paper represents stuff of bigger import.

The next steps are up to you. Either live with two pieces of paper or try to make that smaller paper even smaller?which will make the other paper seem even bigger. If you need to prioritize the big paper stuff, then go ahead. Make it one giant to do list. Whatever you need to do to make it the focus.

The big paper stuff is the big picture. The small paper stuff just blocks your view. Get it out of the way so you can see your big picture clearly.

My Favorite Finds: Jute and Ribbon Fall Wreath

Jute.....I love it! ?It's edging closer to the top of my {FAVORITE} Craft Supplies list. ?I wanted to make a new fall wreath for the front door. ?I absolutely love how it turned out, and it couldn't have been easier!

Supplies:

*1 roll of jute {you can find this in the jewelry making section of craft stores, or where the rope is at home improvement stores}

*Foam wreath circle

*hot glue

*large T-pins

*ribbon, leaves, etc.

Directions: ?

1. ?Secure the end of the jute with a small knot on the foam. ?Use a dab of hot glue to hold it down. ?

2. ?Next, start wrapping the jute around the wreath, working your way around until you cover it. ?Depending how full or thick you want your wreath, you can always go around again. ?

3. ?Then, I took some transparent orange organdy ribbon and wrapped it around the wreath, over the jute, to give it a ribbon look.

4. ?Decide where the top of your wreath is going to be and loop some ribbon through it, tutu style, securing with a T-pin and some hot glue. ?Tie a knot at the top to hang it on the door hook.

5. ?To get the look mine has, I cut small lengths of transparent, organdy ribbon. ?I used yellow and gray ribbon. ?I folded the lengths until the ends met and slightly overlapped. ?Then, I secured them with two T-pins right onto the wreath. ?

Have you made your fall wreath yet? ?For another idea, you can check out my Fall Monogram Wreath from last year. ?

With over 15,000 bras received last year from 43 different states, our new goal for this year is to receive 20,000 bras and at least one from each of the 50 states.? So get started today?look through those dresser drawers and get your donations made.?

Uruguay poised to legalize abortion

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) ? Uruguay's congress appeared ready on Tuesday to legalize abortion, a groundbreaking move in Latin America, where no country save Cuba has made abortions accessible to all women during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Compromises made to secure votes disappointed both sides of the abortion divide, which gathered in protest. Once it gets through Uruguay's lower house, the measure would go back to the Senate for approval of changes, but President Jose Mujica has said he will allow it to become law.

The measure would give women the right to a legal abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and decriminalize later-term abortions when the mother's life is at risk or when the fetus is so deformed that it wouldn't survive after birth. In cases of rape, abortions would be legal during the first 14 weeks.

The goal is to reduce the number of illegal abortions in Uruguay, Congressman Ivan Posada of the center-left Independent Party told his fellow lawmakers Tuesday. Posada wrote the measure and is expected to provide a key 50th vote against the opposition of 49 other lawmakers.

"They talk of 30,000 a year, a hypothetical number, but whatever the number is, it's quite dramatic for a country where 47,000 children are born each year," Posada explained earlier in an Associated Press interview.

A poll this month showed 52 percent of Uruguayans would vote to legalize abortion if the question were put to the people, while 34 percent would vote against it. The survey of 802 people nationwide by the CIFRA consulting firm had a 3.4 percentage point margin of error.

Compromises include requiring women seeking abortions to justify their request before a panel of at least three professionals ? a gynecologist, psychologist and social worker ? and listen to advice about alternatives including adoption and support services if should she decide to keep the baby.

Then, she must wait five more days "to reflect" on the consequences before the procedure.

"It's important that the woman who decides to have an abortion attend this meeting where she will be informed, where they'll explain all the options including alternatives that she is free to choose from," Posada told the AP.

The review panel should obtain the father's point of view, but only if the woman agrees. Women under 18 must show parental consent, but they can seek approval from a judge instead if they're unwilling or unable to involve their parents in the decision.

The measure also allows entire private health care institutions, as well as individual health care providers, to decline to perform abortions.

Such requirements raised objections from Amnesty International and other groups, which say layers of bureaucracy will create barriers and delay abortions until more than 12 weeks have passed, thus forcing women and health care providers into criminal territory.

"This is not the law for which we fought for more than 25 years," complained Marta Agunin, who directs Women and Health, a non-governmental organization in Uruguay.

Also opposed are Uruguay's Catholic and evangelical institutions, which along with public hospitals provide much of the available health care in Uruguay.

A statement from Uruguay's Catholic University says it makes no sense to punish a woman for killing a fetus that is 12 weeks and 1 day old, but to decriminalize abortions before then. Conservatives also object to the removal of a proposal to require the father's consent before any abortion.

Cuba, which decriminalizes abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, is the only country in Latin America where legal abortion is common. Argentina and Colombia allow it only in cases of rape or when the mother's life is endangered. Colombia also allows it when there is proof of fetal malformation. Mexico City has legalized first-trimester abortions, but there are restrictions in most other parts of the country.

Many countries ban abortions under any conditions.

Uruguay's lawmakers have no desire to make their country a destination for women from other countries seeking abortions. The measure says only Uruguayan citizens and women who can prove at least one year's residency can apply. "This is a solution for those who live here, not that Uruguay becomes a place that attracts people from other countries for this procedure," Posada told the AP.

Opposition Deputy Javier Garcia of the center-right National Party accused lawmakers of treating living embryos as if they were "disposable," which he equated with murder.

The margin for the law was razor-thin on Tuesday after Deputy Andres Lima of the ruling Broad Front coalition said he would refuse to vote. With Posada joining the coalition, the measure appeared headed for passage by a 50-49 vote margin.

Dr. Marie Gonzalez, bioethicist at the University of the Republic, called the measure "evil" and vowed to work to persuade her fellow gynecologists to refuse to perform the procedure if it becomes law.

"The embryo-fetus is a human being, and as such has rights, like the human right to live," she said.

They say the world through a child's eyes is pure, free of judgement, and simple...and maybe they are right. It was, after all, during their years as children that they made the bonds that would follow them into their adult years. Of course, looking back they never would have guess their friendship would impact their lives in such a way. They were simply kids doing what kids do best...having fun.

What is Stand By Me about?
Stand By Me: a role play based on life is an interactive role play in which the characters create the plot. They start of a children and over time create bonds, have adventures, and discover themselves through one another.

Of course, that would make things too simply...am I right? Things become more difficult as the characters grow. Life becomes more than just playing tag and building forts. They will struggle though the difficulties of everyday life, while trying to hold on to the friendship they have come to rely on. Some may move away, some may drift apart, and some may stay together, but one fact will stay the same throughout this role play....

Ah, you made the roleplay! I'll begin working on my character but I won't be able to submit it until later. I'm going on a road trip that is a minimum of eight hours in duration because I'm going from a province to a city. DX I hope that's ok! I will be able to finish my character and submit when I arrive or a few hours afterwards (since it will be really late GMT +8 time when I arrive).

Aradia- what country are you from? :)
@Scarlett- here's what I have so far.

I have been always different.

Hi, I'm Mutya Jimenez and I'm _ years old and it is obvious enough to point out that I'm not your average American. In fact, I'm not. I only got my green card when my family decided to move in the USA when I was 2 years old. I wasn't born in the land of freedom, I am an Asian. Filipino to be exact, both parents are.

It wasn't easy for them to adjust at first but they thought it wouldn't be hard for me, in fact I think it was the hardest in my part.

I never knew what my real identity was, years after I still don't.

They're lucky enough to grow in a community they were accepted and treated like their own.

I'm an alien in a planet where being blonde/red/brunette and having an American accent was what was accepted. The accent part was easy to learn, I grew up with Sesame Street and Yo Gabba Gabba.

But when I met the people who would change my life forever, everything turned 180.

I finally belonged.

And this is our story.

Right now just focus on the child aspect of your character. We'll grow them as the role play progresses, so leave out the teen and adult years for now. it adds for a surprise later

I had always been made fun of.
Called names and bullied.
Even if my mom threatens to lock me in my room if I don't change my diet, I always can't help pull that candy bar out of my secret stash.

I'm Madeline Fowler.
Plus size and I'm proud of it.

Just because I can't wear a tiny thong and be considered as one of the Victoria's Secret Angel doesn't mean I have to be stick thin.

I'm curious too. So we will start the character sheet with them as children and just gradually add onto it? I like that. And oh my gosh, really?! I hardly ever meet people from the Phils in rps. :o Mhm. I just moved here last May but both my parents are Filipino and I'm full Filipino so I don't stand out or anything. XD

I think I might start my character at 7 or 8. I'm not too sure. It will most likely be a male. I'm tempted to make him a twin and leave that open to someone but I'm not sure yet.

Obama Campaign Whacks Romney Over Tax Returns And The 47 ...

Video

President Obama?s reelection campaign has bundled together two of the worst things from Mitt Romney?s worst week ever (so far), his hidden camera remarks blasting 47% of Americans who ?pay no ?income tax??as??dependent? on government because they see themselves as ?victims,? and his decision to dump his 2011 tax returns on Friday night. The Obama campaign?s new ad, which will run in Ohio, points out Romney?s 14.1% effective tax rate, his exotic offshore holdings, and his refusal to release more than two years of returns, and concludes, ?Maybe instead of attacking others on taxes?Romney should come clean on his.?

The ad makes efficient hay of Romney?s recent woes, summing them up in a mere thirty seconds, and distinguishes itself from the Romney campaign?s ads by only leaving out context that would have actually made Romney look worse. As Chris Hayes pointed out on his show Saturday, the self-serving 20-year ?summary? Romney released on Friday includes six years during which capital gains were taxed at 30%, inflating the 20.2% average that his accountants reported. Additionally, Romney deliberately declined to report all of his charitable donations, in order to achieve a higher tax rate (the still-very-low 14.1%), a trick that brought his effective tax rate up from an even more embarrassing 9%. From Romney trustee and personal attorney Brad Malt:

The Romneys? generous charitable donations in 2011 would have significantly reduced their tax obligation for the year. The Romneys thus limited their deduction of charitable contributions to conform to the Governor?s statement in August, based upon the January estimate of income, that he paid at least 13% in income taxes in each of the last 10 years.

If there?s anything to quibble with in this ad, it?s the annoying Democratic tendency to present only the most palatable examples of those affected by political debates. This ad says ?Mitt Romney attacked 47% of Americans who pay no income tax? including veterans, elderly, the disabled,? as if it?s okay to attack everyone else (forgivable here because it?s only a 30-second spot), but they do this all the time. When the debate is about access to contraception, they always talk about women who need the Pill for other medical reasons. What about women who just want to be able to have sex without completely altering their lives (like men do)? Isn?t that a constituency we can all get behind?

When the issue is Medicaid, all we hear about are senior citizens and children. So, we should just let a younger man die because his 50 hour-a-week job doesn?t pay him enough to afford health insurance for him and his family? Come to think of it, what about the guy who doesn?t even have a job? That should be an offense punishable by death?

I understand the impulse to present the most moving examples possible, but these arguments would be more effective, in the long run, if they were defended in more broad moral terms.

Here?s the Obama campaign?s accompanying memo and script:

Obama for America Releases New Television Ad: ?No Taxes?

?

CHICAGO?Obama for America released a new television advertisement titled ?No Taxes? to welcome Mitt Romney to Ohio this week.

Mitt Romney may have callously written off 47 percent of Americans, but President Obama knows that Romney was wrong to accuse tens of millions of Americans of not paying their fair share. The overwhelming majority of these Americans are workers, seniors, students, and people with disabilities, and they pay a significant share of their income in taxes, including social security and Medicare taxes and state and local taxes. These Americans shouldn?t be put down; they should be respected for working hard and contributing to their communities.

Instead of accusing hardworking Americans of failing to pay their fair share, Mitt Romney should come clean with the American people. With just two years of returns on the table, Mitt Romney falls far behind longstanding precedent ? failing to match other Presidential candidates.

?No Taxes? will air in Ohio.

New York Times Editorial: By Romney?s Definition, Those Dependent On Government Include ?Include Workers In Low-Paying, Menial Jobs,? ?Elderly Americans,? And ?Disabled Veterans.? ?Gone was the pretense that he will be a president of all Americans. Mr. Romney rather neatly divided the country between the people who matter and the 47 percent he does not care about. To Mr. Romney, that 47 percent consists of people who do not make enough money to be required to pay federal income tax. They are freeloaders, he said, ?who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.? It is not his job, he said, as a candidate nor apparently as president if he is elected, ?to worry about those people.? By his definition, those undeserving freeloaders include workers in low-paying, menial jobs (sometimes more than one job) who don?t even earn enough to owe federal income tax. Also included are elderly Americans whose Social Security pensions are too low to be taxed, disabled veterans and people who were maimed on the job.? [Editorial, New York Times,?9/18/12]
