In the bacterial world of your mouth, nurture wins out over nature

Saturday, October 13, 2012

The human mouth is home to a teeming community of microbes, yet still relatively little is known about what determines the specific types of microorganisms that live there. Is it your genes that decide who lives in the microbial village, or is it your environment? In a study published online in Genome Research (www.genome.org), researchers have shown that environment plays a much larger role in determining oral microbiota than expected, a finding that sheds new light on a major factor in oral health.

Our oral microbiome begins to take shape as soon as we are born and sees a myriad of bacteria introduced to our mouth during childhood and later in life, yet little is known about whether nature (your genes) or nurture (your environment) has a stronger influence. Because of variations in the oral microbiome in both health and diseases like bacteremia and endocarditis, understanding the determinants of oral microbiota communities might lead to better prevention and treatment strategies.

In this study, a team of researchers from the University of Colorado sequenced the microbial DNA present in the saliva samples of a cohort of twins, and matched the DNA sequences in a database to determine which types of bacteria were present in each individual. In their data set, they utilized samples that were gathered over a decade of adolescence from the same individuals to observe how the salivary microbiome changes with time.

By comparing the salivary microbiomes of identical twins, who share the same genetic make-up and live in a common environment, the group found that their salivary microbiomes were not significantly more similar than the salivary microbiota of fraternal twins, who share only half of their genes, suggesting genetic relatedness is not as important as environment. "The conclusion that genetic relatedness plays at most only a small role in microbial relatedness was really a surprise," said Dr. Ken Krauter, senior author of the study.

"We were also intrigued to see that the microbiota of twin pairs becomes less similar once they moved apart from each other," added Simone Stahringer, first author of the study, explaining further evidence for the influence of environment on oral microbiota. Interestingly, in the samples obtained from the same individuals over time, they found that the salivary microbiome changed the most during early adolescence, between the ages of 12 and 17. This suggests that factors such as puberty or prominent behavioral changes at this age might be important.

Krauter explained that their work uncovered another unexpected finding, that there is a core community of bacteria that are present in nearly all humans studied. "Though there are definitely differences among different people, there is a relatively high degree of sharing similar microbial species in all human mouths."

The authors suggested that this report has established a framework for future studies of the factors that influence oral microbial communities. "With broad knowledge of the organisms to expect to find in mouths," said Krauter, "we can now better understand how oral hygiene, environmental exposure to substances like alcohol, methamphetamines and even foods we eat affect the balance of microbes."

Bankrupt Solyndra seeks $1.5 billion in damages from Chinese peers

(Reuters) - Bankrupt solar firm Solyndra has filed a lawsuit against three U.S.-listed Chinese solar players, including Suntech Power Holdings Co , seeking $1.5 billion in compensation due to monopolization by these firms, according to court documents filed on Thursday.

The lawsuit was filed against Suntech, Trina Solar Ltd and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co claiming that the trio's panel prices moved in tandem - falling 75 percent in four years in the U.S.

Solyndra, which claims in the lawsuit that the trio were involved in predatory pricing and price fixing, filed for bankruptcy a year ago as it could no longer compete with plunging prices of solar panels imported from China.

U.S. solar companies launched a complaint last year alleging protectionism from Beijing for Chinese panel makers, sparking trade disputes between the two countries.

As a result of the ongoing tryst, the U.S. slapped steep final duties on billions of dollars of solar energy products from China earlier this week.

Defendants - Suntech, Trina and Yingli - came to the U.S. and raised money from the stock market and deployed that capital to "destroy" American solar manufacturers, said Solyndra in the suit filed in a Northern California district court.

"We just received notice of this complaint, but from our initial review, these are unwarranted and misguided claims from a company that has a clear history of failed technology and achievements," said Robert Petrina, Managing Director, Yingli Green Energy Americas.

The other two Chinese companies named as defendants were not available for comment outside of business hours.

Solyndra has sold everything from its remaining inventory and assembly equipment to office computers in a bid to raise money to repay creditors.

The Obama administration came under fire for missing signs of financial trouble at the California-based Solyndra and approving nearly $535 million in loans in a bid to spark a clean energy industry and create jobs through stimulus spending.

Last year, executives from bankrupt Solyndra LLC testified that a flood of cheap Chinese solar panels kept it from realizing $1.2 billion in contracts it announced in 2008.

The lawsuit is Solyndra, LLC v. Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd et al, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 12-05272.

Local shutterbugs share passion for phone photography ...

ABOUT THE PHOTOS: These photographs were chosen from nearly 200 entries submitted by readers. All pictures were taken on smartphones using a variety of camera apps. Members of the Times Free Press photo staff selected their favorites.

The origins of the phrase are muddled, but one of photography's most oft-repeated sayings is that the best camera you have is the one that's with you when you need it.

Increasingly, that device is no longer a dedicated camera but the ever more sophisticated optics housed in smartphones.

High-end digital single-lens reflex cameras allow photographers to change lenses for different kinds of shots. However, that added bulk makes them less useful for incidental photos than a camera that is only a pocket away, local amateur photographer Claire Wood wrote in an email.

"I usually prefer my iPhone/Instagram [app] photos over my big DSLR camera because these are the real snapshots of life," Wood said. "My phone is always with me, and I treasure these moments I capture with it."

Wood is part of a growing population of hobbyist shutterbugs taking advantage of the built-in photographic capabilities of smartphones.

According to a study released in September by technology firm Qualcomm, 94 percent of respondents said they use their mobile phones to take photos. Smartphones accounted for 27 percent of all photos taken in 2011, up 10 percent over 2010, according to a December 2011 study released by the NPD Group.

Taking over

The technology for capturing those photos also is increasing rapidly.

Camera phones began entering mass production in 2000. The first, Sharp's J-SH04, was released only in Japan and featured a camera with a 0.1-megapixel imaging sensor.

By comparison, most modern smartphones have at least a 5-megapixel sensor. Some, including the recently released Samsung Galaxy SIII and iPhone 5, have 8-megapixel cameras. Currently, the Nokia 808 Pureview, released this summer in Britain, features the most advanced mobile camera with a monstrous 41-megapixel sensor.

Easy access to mobile phones with more capable cameras has helped smartphones close the gap with dedicated point-and-shoot cameras.

In a March 15 story posted on Bloomberg.com, reports from Colorado-based research firm IHS showed that digital camera shipments for 2012 were expected to be 4.3 percent lower than in 2011. Smartphone shipments this year were expected to increase by 35 percent, according to the firm.

"The cellphone camera is becoming more accepted as the primary camera," said Pamela Tufegdzic, an IHC analyst, in the Bloomberg report. "Smartphones are cannibalizing the point-and-shoot, digital-still camera market."

Close at hand

Local hobby and professional photographers said that, although they currently lack the manual controls necessary to replace interchangeable lens cameras, instant access to smartphones makes them an important tool.

Bill Mueller, president of the Chattanooga Photographic Society, has been taking photos since he was a teenager and began seriously shooting five years ago. His primary camera is a Canon 5D Mark III, a DSLR that retails for about $2,000, but for documenting everyday life, he prefers the convenience of his iPhone 4S.

"If I'm out someplace and see something that strikes me, I take the phone out and take a picture of it," he said. "It's definitely replaced a point-and-shoot for me. Instead of throwing a little camera in your pocket, you always have your phone with you."

For years, Mueller said, mobile phone cameras were almost worthless for serious photography. Since the arrival in 2007 of the iPhone, seen by some as the world's first true smartphone, however, that opinion rapidly has changed.

Despite having only a quarter the resolution of the iPhone 5, the first-generation iPhone's 2-megapixel camera and large screen made it the first device to bridge the gap to dedicated equipment, said freelance photographer David Humber, 50.

"Before that, I didn't have anything I would even consider a camera," he said. "The iPhone was the first thing that was put in my hands that I could see some good, practical uses for."

The increasing quality of optics in smartphones combined with their constant connectivity to social-media services have made them the go-to device for documenting everyday life.

"I don't even take my camera anywhere anymore since I got my iPhone," said Wendy Sprague of Rossville in an email. "[The phone] takes way better pictures."

Social slideshow

Last summer, online photo sharing and social-media site Flickr reported that the iPhone was responsible for more uploads to the service than any other source, including DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras.

According to a Sept. 14 report by TechNewsDaily.com, smartphone-only photo editing and sharing service Instagram has 100 million registered users, about double its size after being purchased for $1 billion in April by Facebook. Of those users, about 7.3 million accessed the site daily in August, according to a Sept. 28 article in tablet-only newspaper The Daily.

Soli Photography co-owner and founder Meghan Campbell, 32, has been shooting weddings professionally for six years. Although her Nikon D700 DSLR is her professional equipment of choice, Campbell said her iPhone has become an indispensable tool for capturing her family life.

"We primarily document our whole life with our iPhone, which is crazy to think about," she said. "You have the opportunity to preserve an everyday memory and share those moments immediately with people through Instagram or Facebook or whatever.

"iPhone-ography is going to become its own accepted art form."

Most smartphone lenses lack optical zoom and don't provide access to manual controls enthusiasts said they require. However, some professionals are finding creative ways to push camera phones to their limits.

On Sept. 25, professional photographer and film director Chase Jarvis released "The Best Camera Is the One That's With You," a collection of his iPhone photographs.

"With it, I hope to underscore, and maybe legitimize, that an image can come from any camera, even a mobile phone," Jarvis said in a video preview of his book on Amazon.com. "Almost everyone in our culture these days has a camera. It's in your pocket and attached to your phone.

"You haven't given that thing credibility, and for me, it changed my life."

PHONE ADD-ONS

Unsatisfied with a smartphone's image quality close up or when shooting at a distance? There is a growing market of add-on lenses that provide a more versatile shooting experience. Available in fisheye, wide angle, macro and telephoto.

? Photojojo (www.PhotoJojo.com) offers a trio of lenses in a pack for $50 or individually for $20 to $25. Lenses attach by connecting to a magnetic ring adhered to the phone case.

? PostaGram (www.Postagramapp.com): Via a free iOS or Android app, select images from an Instagram account or phone memory and send a customizable physical postcard to someone. The first one is free, and subsequent 'grams are 99 cents.

? StickyGram (www.StickyGram.com): Via the website, connect to an Instagram account and select nine images to be turned into 50-millimeter-square magnets. $15 per sheet of nine. Free worldwide shipping.

LIGHTEN UP

Smartphone cameras, especially iPhone models preceding the iPhone 5, are notorious for underperforming in low light. So what's an iPhoneographer to do? Local wedding photographer Meghan Campbell offers the following tips for shooting professional portraits in the dark.

? Borrow two iPhones in addition to the one being used to shoot.

? Put a flashlight app on them to create sustained light via the LED flash.

? Place the subject of the shot in front of you and use the second and third iPhone flashes to provide off-camera lighting.

? The flash on the iPhone tends to create a blue tint, so during editing, adjust the hue to warm up your shot.

What experts worry about in the meningitis outbreak

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The widening outbreak of fungal meningitis that has infected 184 Americans and killed 14 people is a new phenomenon for doctors, who typically only see such infections in patients with compromised immune systems.

When people do develop fungal infections, they normally get them from breathing in fungal spores, which can cause infections in the lungs of vulnerable patients, such as those who have had organ transplants. From the lungs, the infection can spread to the blood, and in rare cases to the central nervous system.

In this outbreak, however, the fungi were injected directly along the spines of patients receiving a steroid treatment for back pain. That raises new questions about whether the drugs commonly used to fight such infections will be as effective, how long it will take patients to recover and whether they may suffer damage from the treatment itself.

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases expert at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville and past-president of National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, has been consulting with health department officials in Tennessee, where 50 people so far have been infected through spinal injections of the tainted pain medication.

In an interview, Schaffner describes some of his key concerns.

Q: What is your biggest worry at this point?

A: I want to make sure that all patients who have been exposed and develop symptoms go quickly to a healthcare provider and get an early diagnosis so we can initiate treatment. I'm concerned exactly how effective our treatment will be. It's certain some of these people, even if we can treat their infection, will be left with a disability, because these infections cause tissue damage. The damage will heal, we trust, but the function of the damaged part can't be restored. People who have had stroke syndromes, which are part of this, may be left with disabilities.

Q: What are the concerns with the antifungal drugs amphotericin B and voriconazole, which are being used to treat these patients?

A: The average doctor knows very little about them, has learned about them in medical school and has never used them (since). Using them takes great care. They are both administered intravenously. Patients will have to receive these drugs for some considerable time - weeks. We would hope to at least some time be able to discharge patients from the hospital. If they continue to need IV therapy, they may have to come back to the hospital to receive daily IV administration. Then, we would hope to transfer some of these people to oral voriconazole. Patients will have to continue to be monitored carefully. It's an elaborate course of therapy.

Q: What are the side effects we have to worry about.

A: Amphotericin B has a whole array of side effects. In fact, interns and residents who have a mordant sense of humor call it 'ampho-terrible.' Its most prominent side effect is that it can impair the function of the kidneys. Voriconazole can have adverse effects on the liver.

Q: What makes the patients in this meningitis outbreak different from past cases?

A: Normally, the people who acquire these infections are in some way immuno-compromised, usually bone marrow transplant or organ transplant recipients who are on high doses of steroids and the like. Most of the patients who received these spinal inoculations were somewhat older, because those are the people who get back pain. But they were not, by and large, a uniquely immuno-compromised population. That may account, in part, for why still only fortunately a small proportion of people who were exposed have become ill.

Q: Can we estimate how many people will get sick?

A: It's still very early days. At the moment, for every hundred or so patients who were exposed, it looks as though 5 percent or less are becoming infected. That is our current best estimate. We'll have to see how many more patients become sick. But so far the ratio of patients exposed to those who become ill is fortunately pretty low. I recognize that the absolute number of patients who have become ill is very substantial. Many, many more were exposed to these contaminated inoculations.

Q: Health officials have identified two types of fungi, aspergillus and exserohilum, as being primarily responsible for these infections. What do we know about them?

A: Out in the world, these fungi are very, very common. One (aspergillus) causes leaf mold. The other one is associated with rotting or deteriorating wood. Every once in awhile the wind comes along and blows these microscopic particles into the air, and we are all exposed to them. We inhale them, and nothing happens because these molds don't care to make us ill at all. That's not their business. They are innocuous, except if you happen to be immuno-compromised.

Now, these environmental fungi have somehow gotten into these vials of methylprednisolone. They have been inoculated next to our spines. In that circumstance, which is a unique ecologic niche, these fungi just do what they normally do. They start multiplying and, in effect, eating the tissue they are around, thereby causing an infection. That infection can sometimes result in meningitis.

Things We Love (That We Think No One Else Loves) - NYTimes.com

At the magazine?s weekly ideas meeting, not everyone agrees on what makes an interesting story (of course ? that?s why we have an ideas meeting). Outside work, our individual tastes also run counter at times to what our friends or colleagues consider tolerable. Below, some things that staff members say they love, even when they suspect no one else does (or will admit to loving).

FOOD & DRINK:

    • I love instant coffee, even when the option of freshly-ground coffee is at hand. What makes it worse is that I actually grew up in a coffee farm. My grandmother was the owner of a very large coffee plantation, so my excuse for substituting instant coffee for fresh out of the plant coffee for most people is confusing. But I just love the taste! Some milk and sugar, and I am set. My mornings simply wouldn?t hold to the same standards if instant coffee didn?t exist. Sorry freshly-ground coffee.

?

    • Big fruity, oaky chardonnay.

?

  • Shirley Temples, with extra cherries.
    • Pi?a coladas. And not just on vacation.

?

?

?

    • Boston cream pie. Every other middle-American cuisine has had its revival. Why not this?

?

MUSIC:

?

    • I like out jazz, like late Coltrane when he?d stopped worrying about songs and just went off into the stratosphere instead, and Larry Young?s ?Khalid of Space.?

?

    • I really truly love yodeling music. Especially the Cackle Sisters from the 1930s-40s. They made amazing music.
    • The soundtrack from ?Grease.?

?

?

    • The idea that it?s O.K. to put on Stevie Wonder?s ?Evil? at a dance party.

?

?

?

?

    • I listen to a ton of country music ? mainstream Nashville, Top 20 stuff. No one I know personally likes that at all.

?

?

    • Kesha. Especially this video:

MOVIES AND T.V.:

    • ?Arthur.? The Dudley Moore/John Gielgud movie, not the cartoon about the kid aardvark.

?

    • I can?t stop watching the ?Real World?/?Road Rules? challenges on MTV no matter how ridiculous it is or ever was.

?

    • The ?American Pie? movies

?

    • ?Boogie Nights.? I thought it was a fantastic movie, maybe even a classic. And on top of that I found it incredibly funny. When I tell this to people, I generally get a strange reaction ? most think it?s an average movie that?s terribly depressing . . .

?

    • Teen dramas, in particular the sort of stuff that runs on the Soap Network over the weekend. ?The O.C.,? ?One Tree Hill,? ?90210? (the original class, not these new kids), ?Veronica Mars,? ?Dawson?s Creek,? ?Felicity.? I love it all.

?

?

    • ?The Chronicles of Riddick.? Vin Diesel at his All-Galaxy best.

?

    • Mostly no one is surprised that I like what I like, except when I tell them how much I enjoyed ?You, Me and Dupree? ? an almost universally panned rom-com. I?ve seen it twice!

?

    • I love the movie ?America?s Sweethearts.? Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 31 percent approval rating. Among its many charms it has Hank Azaria in a supporting role as a Latin lover named Hector Gorgonzolas.

LIFESTYLE:

    • Navy and black together and especially red and pink together. Red and pink is one of my favorite color combinations though everyone else in the world seems to think it?s hideous.

?

    • Car shows and car museums

?

?

?

    • I adore algebra. Quadratic expressions, factoring, differential equations, functions and algorithms. Finding the value of variables always brings me a great deal of joy.

?

    • Khloe Kardashian. My friends can admit she is the lesser of evils, but I love her. I think she?s completely awesome.

?

?

?

    • I really like Teen Vogue Magazine, seven years removed from being a teenager.

?

    • Joe Frank, the spoken-word artist. (And whoever likes the Cackle Sisters? I like them too. You are not alone.)

How food marketers can help consumers eat better while improving their bottom line

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? Food marketers are masters at getting people to crave and consume the foods that they promote. In this study authors Dr. Brian Wansink, co-director of the Cornell University Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition and Professor of Marketing and Dr. Pierre Chandon, professor of Marketing at the leading French graduate school of business, INSEAD challenge popular assumptions that link food marketing and obesity.

Their findings presented last weekend at the Association for Consumer Research Conference in Vancouver, Canada point to ways in which smart food marketers can use the techniques that peak consumer appetite for calorie-dense fast foods to help people eat better -- and improve their bottom line as well.

"People generally want food that tastes good while being affordable, varied, convenient and healthy -- roughly in that order. Our research suggests that consumption of healthy and unhealthy food respond to the same marketing tactics, particularly price reduction. In this study we present food marketers with a 'win-win' situation in which they can turn the tables, compel consumers to eat healthier foods, and maintain profitability. For example, marketers can steer consumers away from high-calorie sugary drinks by offering meal discounts if a person buys a diet drink -- or by offering a healthy habit loyalty card when consumers opt for milk, juice or water instead of sugary drinks. "When all sides win, no one resists," Wansink said.

Diverse intestinal viruses may play a role in AIDS progression

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? In monkeys and humans with AIDS, damage to the gastrointestinal tract is common, contributing to activation of the immune system, progressive immune deficiency, and ultimately advanced AIDS. How this gastric damage occurs has remained a mystery, but now researchers reporting in the Cell Press journal Cell provide new clues, implicating the presence of potentially pathogenic virus species other than the main virus that causes AIDS. The findings could provide an opportunity to explain and eventually intervene in the processes that lead to AIDS progression.

To investigate what causes gastrointestinal damage in monkeys and humans with AIDS, researchers used a sequencing method that allows them to obtain genetic sequences of all of the bacterial, viral, and other organisms residing in the gastrointestinal tract. Using this technique, they examined the feces of monkeys with SIV-induced AIDS, monkeys without SIV infection, and monkeys infected with SIV strains that do not cause AIDS. (SIV is the monkey counterpart to HIV.)

"We found that the gastrointestinal tract of the animals with AIDS contained a large number of previously undescribed viruses -- including potential pathogens, but we did not see any obvious changes in the bacteria. This means that previously unrecognized viruses may contribute to AIDS disease progression in monkeys," explains co-author Dr. Dan Barouch, of Harvard Medical School and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in Boston. It's not clear why monkeys with AIDS have more intestinal viruses, but it may be related to their compromised immune system.

The researchers also noted that some of the viruses in the feces of monkeys with AIDS were also found circulating in the animals' blood. In addition, many were RNA viruses, meaning that their genetic material is made up of RNA rather than DNA. "This is the first time anyone has looked at both DNA- and RNA-based organisms in the fecal matter in association with AIDS. The striking finding of so many RNA viruses to go along with DNA viruses opens up the broader issue of whether we need to rethink how we study the genomes of microorganisms that may affect disease," says senior author Dr. Herbert Virgin, of the Washington University School of Medicine, in Saint Louis.

In addition to providing new information on how AIDS advances, and therefore how to potentially intervene to slow it down, the results indicate that the viruses found in AIDS patients' intestines could indicate how progressive their disease will be.

Microsoft's Digits Could Turn Us All Into Hand Dancers

The long-lived and usually reliable mouse could soon be put out to pasture, as Microsoft unveiled this week a new hand-gesture sensor that could allow users to point with their fingers rather than a cursor. The new Digits prototype is part of an effort to create a mobile device that could transform interaction with a computer interface.

Mental illness and Substance abuse: Life after dual diagnosis ...

Dual diagnosis treatment can give a woman her life back.? When substance abuse and mental illness get in the way of a woman?s ability to maintain her relationships or perform at work she is unable to live a healthy, productive life.? dual diagnosis treatmentDual diagnosis treatment is beneficial for individuals who suffer from co-occurring disorders to ensure a successful recovery by treating both disorders at the same time. This helps reduce the risk of relapse from the substance abuse issues, and allow for improvement management of symptoms of the mental health disorder.

People who suffer from substance abuse problems and mental disorders often have difficulties forming meaningful social relationships with others. These disorders can become a barrier to normal, healthy relationships at work and at home. Many women also suffer from poor self-esteem or self-image, putting them at higher risk for relapse without dual diagnosis treatment.

Dual diagnosis treatment programs emphasize on treating both problems simultaneously to make recovery more effective in the long run. A dual diagnosis treatment team generally includes specialized teams of mental health and substance abuse professionals that all work together to apply different therapeutic treatment methods for effective recovery. Treatment techniques involve one-on-one, and group therapy sessions to help clients identify triggers that may hinder the process of recovery and affect their quality of life.

Long term recovery from substance abuse and mental health disorders is dependent on making better decisions, maintaining a positive behavior pattern and continuing treatment.? Treatment after rehab includes participation in aftercare programming, like support groups, and alumni events.? This step in the recovery process is crucial in maintaining long term sobriety and a strong support network.? Aftercare also helps women develop coping strategies that will help deal with difficult circumstances and trigger situations. Being prepared for these types of situations by having an action plan can also reduce the number of chances for potential relapse.

Support groups are often used beyond the initial treatment to supply the motivation and support that is often needed to overcome the obstacles of sobriety. Dual diagnosis treatment emphasizes the importance of leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle that is important to both the physical and mental well-being. Eating healthy, exercising, adequate sleep and relaxation techniques are essential to improving the emotional well-being and developing a higher quality of life.

Life after dual diagnosis treatment should be improved and focused on long-term recovery. If you or someone you love needs help coping with substance abuse and mental illness, dual diagnosis treatment can help them regain control of their life. Substance abuse and mental illness can present a challenging environment for recovery; fortunately both can be treated with the right program.? If you need more information on dual diagnosis treatment, please call us today at 1-866-808-7111. PST: Favorites emerge for new US women's coach

If you?re looking to get up to speed on Pia Sundhage?s potential replacements, you won?t get a better dossier than Lauren Barker?s post at Stars and Stripes FC. Of the five people who were interviewed last week, Barker profiles the three who seem to have the best chance of being the next U.S. Women?s National Team coach (though U.S. Soccer is doing a good job keeping the candidate).

Allow me to build on Lauren?s good work ?

Right now, Notre Dame head coach Randy Waldrum appears to be the favorite. As Barker notes, if there was a line of succession to the role, it would be his turn. Three of Sundhage?s four predecessors had significant head coaching experience at the college level, where Waldrum?s been extremely successful. In this Anson Dorrance, North Carolina-dominated era of college soccer, Waldrum?s managed to win two national titles. Given U.S. women?s soccer?s dependence on the college game as its exclusive provider of talent, expertise with NCAA soccer is the significant advantage Waldrum has over most of his competition.

That competition is coming from Paul Riley, the former coach of the Philadelphia Independence. Though a favorite among those who watched his WPS teams, Riley was initially considered a long shot for the position. The England-born coach had vehemently spoken out against Pia Sundhage?s use of Any Rodriguez, claiming the then-Independence forward?s confidence was destroyed by Sundhage?s handling of her at the 2011 World Cup. There, Sundhage benched Rodriguez, a long time (struggling) starter for the team, as the likes of Lauren Cheney, Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath started getting more starts.

U.S. Soccer has apparently seen the outburst for what it was ? a tactic designed to boost Rodriguez?s spirits. Riley may yet replace the coach he so ardently attacked.

During his two years in Women?s Professional Soccer, there was little doubt Riley was the league?s best coach. He won consecutive Coach of the Year awards while taking teams with inferior talent to back-to-back championship games (including in Philadelphia?s expansion year of 2010). He skillfully manages to be both demanding and a players? coach, adding the tactical acumen to leverage his players? work and trust. Most tellingly, Riley managed to take an array of different attackers (Tasha Kai, Veronica Boquete, Rodriguez) and turn them into weapons, hinting his plans were as influential as the players? talents.

Unlike Waldrum, Riley doesn?t have an extensive college background. He started his coaching career at C.W. Post ? a small Division II program in Long Island ? but left in 1997. From there he went into the U.S. semi-pro ranks, initially coaching in the PDL before switching to the women?s game. Like Sundhage, he?s a foreign-born, has significant domestic experience, and manages to be a personality (a completely different one than Sundhage) without putting himself center stage.

Gulati, however, hinted last week that all things being equal, U.S. Soccer would prefer an American coach. Does Riley qualify? He?s been in the United States for 30 years, but he was born in England. To some, he might not be as American as the Texas-born Waldrum, but how much ?American? do you need to qualify? At some point, you?re either American or you?re not.

(Trivia: Waldrum and Riley were born two days apart in 1961.)

Right now, it looks like Waldrum?s college success (along with his time coaching the U.S. Women?s U-20 National Team) have given him the inside track, but Riley?s close enough to be considered a co-favorite. Barring a last minute surge from the pack, one of these two will win the race.

Barker mentions one of those pack members: former national team coach Tony DiCicco, who most fans will know for his work as an ESPN analyst during the 2011 World Cup. More recently, he spent two disappointing years as head coach of the Boston Breakers, results overshadowed by his role in guiding the U.S. to first at the 1999 World Cup.

The major concern with DiCicco would be the change in approach to him from Sundhage. On a spectrum of styles, DiCicco?s would be far removed from Pia Sundhage, a head coach whose close relationship with her players was a unique combination of peer and parent ? one inspiring deep loyalty. As we saw on ESPN?s set last summer (in the relationship between Brandi Chastain and her former coach), DiCicco?s style is closer to a traditional coach-player relationship. With a veteran team coming off five years of Sundhage, switching to DiCicco may prove too drastic.

Oil rises on Syria-Turkey tensions

LONDON (Reuters) - Oil rose further above $112 a barrel on Tuesday after two days of losses, with tensions in the Middle East and the risk of supply disruptions outweighing concerns about sluggish global demand.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Monday the "worst-case scenarios" between his country and Syria were now playing out, fuelling concerns that the 18-month-old conflict in Syria may spread to other countries in the region.

"There are latent supply risks on the oil market since Turkey might become involved in the conflict in Syria, which would affect key oil transport routes," said a Commerzbank research note.

Brent futures rose 54 cents to $112.36 by 1049 GMT. U.S. crude climbed 31 cents to $89.64, also rebounding after two consecutive sessions of declines.

Tensions between Syria and Turkey are at their worst since March after cross-border firing accidentally killed some Turkish civilians last week, causing Istanbul to boost its military presence along the border.

This could threaten oil production in the north of Iraq and its transport to the West, analysts said.

Concerns over Syria have eclipsed Iran's long-running row with the West over Tehran's disputed nuclear program that has led to sanctions on Iranian oil shipments.

OPEC's biggest producer, Saudi Arabia, has raised output to a 30-year high of 10 million barrels per day (bpd) - helping to compensate for the cut in exports from Iran.

And Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi said on Tuesday Saudi Arabia would continue to pump at around that rate this month. The veteran oil minister said oil prices were still too high and Riyadh would like it to fall towards $100.

More supply is also on the way from neighboring Iraq, OPEC's second biggest producer after Saudi. Exports this month are expected to rise above 2.8 million bpd, the highest in decades, and output is on course to more than double by 2020.

IMF CUTS FORECAST

A poor outlook for the global economy is keeping a lid on oil price gains.

The International Monetary Fund cut its global growth forecast for the second time since April and warned U.S. and European policymakers that failure to fix their economic ills would prolong the slump.

For 2012, the IMF now expects global output to grow just 3.3 percent, down from its July estimate of 3.5 percent, making it the slowest year of growth since 2009.

It predicted only a modest pickup next year to 3.6 percent, below its July estimate of 3.9 percent.

Growth in China's economy, the world's second-biggest, will slow to 7.8 percent this year from 9.2 percent in 2011, the IMF said, warning of risks to emerging Asia if the euro zone crisis worsens and the United States does not avoid its "fiscal cliff".

Researchers use magnets to kill cancer cells | The Verge

Researchers are developing a technique to fight cancer cells using magnets, according to a new study published in Nature. The technique works by binding iron oxide nanoparticles to antibodies, which seek out and attach to tumor cells. By introducing a magnetic field, researchers can trigger natural cell death, known as apoptosis, which causes the cancer cells to die without harming surrounding healthy tissue. The researchers tested the new technique in vitro and on living zebra fish, and found that more than half of the cancer cells died while no healthy cells were harmed. However, the zebra fish experiments resulted in abnormal tail growth, so the new technology obviously has a long way to go before it can even be tested on humans.

Hackers slaughter thousands in 'World of Warcraft'

2 hrs.

"World of Warcraft" has suffered a?cataclysm. And we're not talking about?"Cataclysm,"?the?expansion?to the hugely?popular online fantasy?game.?We're talking about a massive?epidemic?of virtual deaths brought on by a plague ...?of?hackers.

On Sunday, thousands of players of the game suddenly found their characters dropping?dead for?what seemed to be no reason. Virtual corpses piled up in the cities of?Stormwind and Orgrimmar as well as?Tarren Mill, Ragnaros and others.

According to Blizzard, the game's publisher, it was hackers that caused the mass die off. Hackers discovered an exploit in the game and went to work spreading instant-deaths across the land, Blizzard?community manager?Nethaera?explained in the forums:

Earlier today, certain realms were affected by an in-game exploit, resulting in the deaths of player characters and non-player characters in some of the major cities. This exploit has already been hotfixed, so it should not be repeatable. It's safe to continue playing and adventuring in major cities and elsewhere in Azeroth.

As with any exploit, we are taking this disruptive action very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation. If you have information relating to this incident, please email hacks@blizzard.com. We apologize for the inconvenience some of you experienced as a result of this and appreciate your understanding.

Meanwhile, a person going by the name Jadd on YouTube and?in the forums at?"WoW" hack and exploit site?Ownedcore?has claimed?responsibility?for the virtual apocalypse.

"We didn't do any permanent damage," Jadd writes. "Some people liked it for a new topic of conversation and a funny stream to watch, and some people didn't. The people who didn't should be blaming Blizzard for not fixing it faster (4 hours of obvious use is sad)."

And the hacker adds, "It's not like I added 20000000 gold to everyone's inventory, and broke the economy; but look at the big Chinese gold seller companies, who are doing this every day. Now ask yourself who is really ruining the game. It's not us.?That's my justification."

"We hope you find it as funny as we do! ," Jadd writes on this YouTube video?showing off the instant-kill hack.

You can watch the slaughter in action via several YouTube videos. Check them out below:

Ultimately it's not the end of the world as "World of Warcraft" players know it. After all, players can resurrect their dead?characters. Still, many "WoW" players were not amused.

"They really should face legal action if Blizzard can track them down by home address. This amount of disruption really is beyond just a minor thing or 2," wrote a player going by the name Dream Lifter in the "WoW" forums. "Doesn't matter is it is a bunch of kids or not, breaking the law is breaking the law. Think it is funny now, but when the police come in it won't be so funny anymore."

But then again,?not everyone was particularly?upset about the experience either.

"Personally I like it when this stuff happens," wrote a player going by the name Kitez?in the game's forums. "Everyone complaining now will be telling this story fondly in a few months."

Will this Man be Orangetown's Financial SAVIOR?? | The Rockland ...

Supervisor Stewart chooses a new finance director; and he?s a veteran in more ways than one

?Mr. Bencik, can you save us the dregs of tax hell??

?I can?t make any promises Mr. Stewart, but I?ll sure as heck try.?

So might have gone the first interview between desperate-for-tax-relief Supervisor of Orangetown Andy Stewart and the brand new finance director he just hired, Jeff Bencik.

Bencik is a 42-year-old Haverstraw resident (Dutchtown to be exact), with a BS in engineering from West Point 1992, MBA in finance, experience in Army (Germany and Bosnia), on Wall St., in real estate investment and general contracting.

Stewart said, ?Jeff is a smart, young professional whose proven experience in finance, engineering and real estate make him a very timely addition to Orangetown?s management team. The fact that he has climbed Mt. Rainier, is passionate about antique motorboats and speaks German fluently should make him interesting to work with.?

Besides overseeing town finances and budget, Bencik?s mission will be to work directly with department heads to provide research and analysis in supporting greater efficiency, productivity and measurable community benefits from all town operations.

In addition, Stewart said Bencik?s expertise in business development and real estate will make him a key player in the town?s economic development program, including the redevelopment of the former Rockland Psych lands and the attraction/retention of businesses to improve the town?s tax base.

Stewart said, ?In these tough economic times we can afford to leave no stone unturned in our effort to save money and produce value for the community? Jeff brings both military discipline and entrepreneurial spirit to this challenge.?

People with schizophrenia more likely to die of heart attack, CAMH finds

People with schizophrenia more likely to die of heart attack, CAMH finds [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 3-Oct-2012
[ | E-mail | Share Share ]

Contact: Anita Dubey

Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

For immediate release - Oct., 3 (Toronto) - The risk of death resulting from heart attack is higher in people with schizophrenia than in the general public, according to scientists at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES).

On average, people with schizophrenia have a lifespan 20 years shorter than the general population. This is partly due to factors such as smoking, increased rates of diabetes, and metabolic problems brought on by the use of some antipsychotic medications. These factors often worsen once a cardiac condition arises because people with schizophrenia are less likely to make the necessary lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, to offset the problem.

This study, published online in Schizophrenia Research, examined mortality and access to cardiac care after heart attacks (acute myocardial infarction) in those with schizophrenia.

Dr. Paul Kurdyak, Chief, Division of General and Health Systems Psychiatry at CAMH, analyzed four years of Ontario-wide patient data and tracked all incidents of heart attack among people with schizophrenia, and compared results to people without schizophrenia.

"When we looked at the data, we found that people with schizophrenia were 56 per cent more likely to die after discharge from hospital following a heart attack than those who did not have schizophrenia," says Dr. Kurdyak, also an Adjunct Scientist at ICES. "We also found that patients with schizophrenia, despite the increase in mortality risk after a heart attack, were half as likely to receive life-saving cardiac procedures and care from cardiologists than those without schizophrenia."

Specifically, the study found that people with schizophrenia were 50 per cent less likely to receive cardiac procedures or to see a cardiologist within 30 days of discharge from hospital.

"The numbers tell us that people with schizophrenia-- the ones who are at most risk to develop and subsequently die from heart attacks -- are not receiving adequate care," says Dr. Kurdyak. "The possible solutions are two-fold: prevention is one. We need to support patients whom we know are at risk of developing medication-related metabolic issues by working with them to provide strategies to offset weight gain, such as healthy eating and physical activity. The other part is aftercare - the mental health care team, primary care providers, and the cardiac specialists need to work together to ensure that patients are seen again after a first incident of heart attack."

ICES knowledge is highly regarded in Canada and abroad, and is widely used by government, hospitals, planners, and practitioners to make decisions about care delivery and to develop policy.
