Chelsea, Liverpool end 2012 with away wins

LONDON (AP) -Frank Lampard boosted Chelsea's hopes of reeling in the Manchester teams in the Premier League title race, scoring twice in a 2-1 win at Everton on Sunday to remind the club of his enduring class with his future still uncertain.

However, beleaguered Queens Park Rangers edged closer to relegation with a lackluster 3-0 home loss to Liverpool, leaving the last-place club eight points adrift of safety heading into 2013.

Chelsea fell behind to Steven Pienaar's strike after just 63 seconds at Goodison Park but hit back through goals either side of the halftime by Lampard, who is free to talk to other clubs from Tuesday with his contract up in the summer.

A fourth straight win kept third-place Chelsea four points behind Manchester City, and 11 off Manchester United, with a game in hand on both rivals going into the new year.

Rafa Benitez is slowly putting his stamp on the European champions five weeks after joining the club as interim manager but his next task may be to persuade his bosses to hand the 34-year-old Lampard, who has been at Chelsea since 2001, a new deal.

"I just hope for me personally (to) play in a winning team," said Lampard, who has scored in each of his last three starts. "I know there's a lot of speculation and talk . but for me the enjoyable bit is the 90 minutes."

Luis Suarez scored twice in the opening 16 minutes to take his league tally to 13 - one behind top scorer Robin van Persie of Man United - and Daniel Agger added the other for mid-table Liverpool, with all three goals coming in a one-sided first half.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wasn't at Loftus Road - he was sent home from London hours before kickoff because of illness - but he would have enjoyed watching from afar as Suarez and his teammates ran amok.

"We played probably our best football of the season in the first half," Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said. "Luis Suarez has been brilliant ... he's a magician."

Liverpool climbed a position to ninth and is five points off fifth-place Arsenal.

Chelsea stayed in the title hunt by ending Everton's nine-month unbeaten run at home, but the visitors will come away from Goodison Park knowing they were fortunate to survive an onslaught by David Moyes' side.

Nikica Jelavic twice struck the goal frame, as did fellow striker Victor Anichebe, as Everton passed up a chance to move ahead of its opponent.

"We've run the European champions really close but we didn't quite have enough in the end," Moyes said. "We played well enough to get a second goal but were unfortunate, having shots back off the woodwork. I thought we were a bit unlucky."

It was left to Lampard to rescue Chelsea, demonstrating the priceless knack of finding time and space in the area that has made him one of the most prolific midfielder in Premier League history.

The England midfielder headed in a cross from Ramires in the 42nd and then was on the spot to scoop home from close range after Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard saved from Juan Mata.

"We have to keep believing this season - there is a long way to go," Lampard said. "We can only win our games, then rely on other things."

The Washington Huskies have officially hired Marques Tuiasosopo to be the team?s new quarterbacks coach.

"Marques is a Husky football legend, and we?re excited to welcome him back home to Washington," said Coach Steve Sarkisian. ?He brings a high level of expertise about the quarterback position which will be of great benefit to our program."

In 46 games for the Huskies from the 1997 through 2000 seasons, Tuiasosopo passed for 5,879 yards and 33 touchdowns while rushing for 1,495 more yards with 21 more scores. He was the 2000 Pac-10 offensive player of the year.

This booking photo provided by the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nev,. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, shows 50-year-old Brenda Stokes. Police in Las Vegas have issued a plea for information about 10-year-old Jade Morris after she failed to return home Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from a shopping trip with a woman who is thought to be Stokes. Stokes was arrested that night and accused of slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip. This undated photo provided by the Las Vegas Police Department shows Jade Moris, 10, who police are searching for after she failed to return home Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from a shopping trip with a woman arrested that night and accused of slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The woman, Brenda Stokes, 50, made her first appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. (AP Photo/Las Vegas Police Department)

(AP) ? Police suspect that a casino worker killed a 10-year-girl before going to a Las Vegas resort and allegedly slashing the face of a co-worker with razor blades.

The search for Jade Morris ended Friday afternoon when officials confirmed that it was her body that was found a day earlier in an undeveloped housing tract.

The Clark County coroner's office said she died of multiple stab wounds. Jade was last seen Dec. 21 with family friend Brenda Stokes Wilson, who picked her up to go Christmas shopping.

Wilson, 50, returned the car she had borrowed for the outing to a friend two hours later. Jade never came back. Investigators later found blood on the driver's door and steering wheel of the 2007 Saab sedan.

Later that night, Wilson was wrestled to the ground with razors in each hand after allegedly slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio casino.

A judge raised her bail from $60,000 to $600,000 Friday morning after she was identified as the prime suspect in the child's killing.

"It's no secret the defendant is the suspect in the murder of 10-year-old Jade Morris," prosecutor Robert Daskas told Senior Clark County District Court Judge Joseph Bonaventure at the hearing.

Later Friday, Las Vegas police homicide Capt. Chris Jones said investigators were still moving forward.

"As soon as we get all the evidence in that we need, we'll book her on the murder charges," he said.

Wilson has been jailed since the 21st on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison.

Police said she offered no help in the search for the missing girl. Murder and kidnapping charges could get her life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

On Thursday, Las Vegas police responding to a 911 call found a girl's body in unkempt brush near palm trees in a small traffic circle about 10 miles from the downtown Las Vegas outlet mall where Stokes was to have taken the girl shopping.

On Friday evening, Jones called the slaying "unfathomable."

"Even having our jobs, we still can't wrap our heads around this," he said. "A lot of people think that just because of our positions we can understand it, but we can't."

In court Friday morning, Wilson stood flanked by eight police officers as her lawyer, Tony Liker, clutching a Bible and a copy of the charging documents, asked the judge to postpone arraignment until Wednesday to give him time to meet with Wilson.

Wilson, who had been identified by police and prosecutors as Brenda Stokes, told the judge Friday that her full name was Brenda Stokes Wilson.

Jade's father, Philip Morris, was removed from court Wednesday by armed court officers after shouting questions about his daughter's whereabouts to Wilson. He did not attend Friday's hearing.

The two dated for several years, and Jade had a long and trusting relationship with Wilson, according to the girl's grandfather, Philip Tucker.

Tucker said Philip Morris lived in Billings, Mont., and worked at a Flying J truck stop for more than a year. He would stay with Wilson when he visited Las Vegas, Tucker said.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the slaying. But Tucker said Wilson appeared to believe that the face-slashing victim had become romantically involved with Philip Morris.

Wilson picked up Jade for their shopping expedition around 5 p.m. Later, she got a ride with a friend to the Bellagio. She allegedly attacked her co-worker, Joyce Rhone, at around 9:30 p.m.

Rhone, 44, was hospitalized with deep cuts on her face, including one from her ear to the edge of her mouth.

Wilson told investigators that she visited her doctor last week, seeking to be admitted to a hospital "due to feeling like she wanted to hurt someone."

Stocks drop as lawmaker sees 'fiscal cliff' ahead

4 hrs.

Stocks fell near session lows Thursday, with all key S&P sectors in negative territory, pressured by a weaker-than-expected consumer confidence report and as President Barack Obama and members of Congress headed back to Washington to resume talks over the looming "fiscal cliff."

So far, all three major averages are on pace to closing lower for the month. Still, the Dow is up nearly 6 percent for the year, while the S&P and Nasdaq are both up more than 10 percent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell near the psychologically?important level of 13,000, dragged by Bank of America and JPMorgan, after closing lower for the third-consecutive session. The last time the Dow traded below 13,000 was back in Dec. 5, when it hit a low 12,923.44.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also declined. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, jumped above 20 for the first time in nearly five months.

All key S&P sectors were in the red, dragged by financials and energy.

"Moves are always exacerbated during low-volume days and we'll continue to react to every headline from Washington," said Keith Bliss, senior vice president at Cutton & Co. "But I still think the overall market is in a bullish sentiment by the way that the technical are lining up. It might be prudent to keep some powder dry and buy on these dips."

Stocks took a sharp leg lower after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressed doubts that a deal can be reached to avert the "fiscal cliff."

"It looks like that's where we're headed," Reid said of the looming fiscal cliff and pointed fingers at House Speaker John Boehner of running a "dictatorship" by "not allowing the vast majority of the House of Representatives to get what they want."

Obama cut short his Christmas vacation in Hawaii to deal with the deadlocked talks between Democrats and Republicans on what to do with $600 billion in tax increases and automatic spending cuts, due to kick in on Jan. 1. With less than a week remaining this year, time is now running out and the pressure on politicians to find a solution is building, as U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned the U.S. will hit the debt ceiling on Monday, Dec. 31.

The two sides could work towards a "mini-deal" to postpone the effects of the fiscal cliff by extending tax cuts for taxpayers with incomes below $250,000, postponing the automatic spending cuts, and extending unemployment benefits.?

Meanwhile on the economic front, the consumer confidence index tumbled to 65.1 in December from a downwardly revised 71.5 in November, hitting a four-month low, according to the Conference Board.

Earlier, jobless claims fell 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 350,000 last week. Meanwhile, the four-week moving average tumbled to its lowest since March 2008.?

And new home sales rose 4.4 percent in November to a seasonally adjusted 377,000-unit annual rate, the fasts pace in 2-1/2 years, according to the Commerce Department.

Marvell Technology declined after a federal grand jury ruled the chipmaker infringed two patents held by Carnegie Mellon University and ordered the company to pay $1.17 billion in damages. In addition, at least two brokerages lowered their rating on the company.

Toyota Motor said it plans to settle a U.S. class-action lawsuit for $1.1 billion.

Domino's Pizza climbed after Oppenheimer raised its price target on the pizza chain to $50 from $44.

Hartford Financial Services edged higher after Stifel added the financial services company to its "select" list and raised its target price to $28 from $25.

BCD Semiconductor skyrocketed more than 90 percent after the chipmaker agreed to be bought by Diodes in a deal worth $151 million.?

In Europe, stocks rose in cautious trading after being closed for Christmas and Boxing Day.?Meanwhile, in Asia, Japanese stocks hit a 21-month high as a weaker yen boosted export stocks. Sentiment in Asia was boosted as profits at China's factories jumped in November, helped by the recovery in the economy.

How to set up your new HDTV

13 hrs.

It?s not possible for a TV to be set at the factory with the best settings possible for your home. Take 20 minutes or so on your end, and you can drastically improve the picture quality. If you just bought a TV, or just haven't found the time to mess around with your set,?here are tips for doing it right.?

If you really?want to nail it,?we suggest a?setup Blu-ray. They?re cheap, and the?Disney WOW?disc is especially helpful and easy to follow. (A step-up from that would be the $30?ISF HDTV?Calibration Wizard.)

Straight?out of the box
All HDTVs generally?have a start-up?screen that lets the user to choose between a home mode and a store demo mode.?This is extremely important. The store mode is designed to produce the brightest image ? at the expense of black level, contrast ratio and energy efficiency. To obtain the best picture select the home mode. You will still be able to make fine-tuning?adjustments to maximize image quality.

The screen will also ask you to choose your?language, and will ask about using over-the-air antenna or cable/satellite. If you don?t use an antenna, make sure you select cable/satellite.?You don?t want the TV to go into the tuner mode,?because?you won't see an image.

Special instructions for smart TVs
If your new HDTV has Internet connectivity for streaming movies and other content, the next step should be connecting to the Internet. All smart TVs have an Ethernet connection if you want to wire the TV directly. Many also have Wi-Fi for wireless set-up. Follow the on-screen instructions or the?owner?s manual for the proper steps.

Once completed, you should make sure you have the latest version of the TV's software, by performing a firmware update as per your TV's instructions. The update may add new features, Internet services and even apps, and will assure you have the latest and best version of your new HDTV. Don't skip this:?Nearly every TV we test has newer firmware waiting for it when we connect it to the Internet.

Picture modes
Nearly all TVs have picture modes that adjust multiple settings to create a certain look to the image. The best idea is to start with the most accurate setting, then adjust as you see fit. With nearly all TVs, this mode is called ?Movie,? ?Cinema,? or something similar. If these aren?t options, ?Standard? is likely closest.

If you?ve already?been watching your TV for more than a few minutes, switching to one of these modes is going to be a shock. It will seem red (warm) and soft. It isn?t, which I?ll explain as we go.

Contrast
This control adjusts the bright parts of the image: Clouds, white shirts, snow, etc. The idea is to set this control high enough that the image ?pops,? but not so high as to mask detail, like cloud?textures or shirt?wrinkles. All TVs have a maximum contrast setting, above which you?re not making the image any brighter,?you?re just making near-white objects totally white.

If you?re using a setup disc, the contrast pattern will have a ramp of progressively whiter bars. The idea is to be able see most of these (but not those labeled ?above white?).

If you?re not using a setup disc, find a TV show (ideally a live sporting event) that takes place outside. Skiing works great for this, though baseball does as well (fly balls, any shot of the sky). The idea is to be able to set the control so that you can still see detail in bright white objects. There should almost never be bright white blobs on the screen. If there are, turn the contrast control down until those blobs get their detail back.

There is no average number to use as a guideline for setting?contrast, but it?s almost never 100 percent,?or anything close. Start somewhere around 80 percent and go from there.

Brightness
This is the opposite of the contrast control. Despite its name, brightness control adjusts the dark parts of the image: Shadows, black hair, black leather jackets. The idea here is to set it low enough that the picture has lots of contrast (as in, the difference in the light and dark parts of the image), but not so far that there?s just huge swaths of blackness on screen during any night scene.

If you?re using a setup disc, the brightness pattern will have a ramp of progressively darker black bars. The idea is to be able see most of these (but not those labeled ?below black? or similar).

If you?re setting this by eye, any night or darkly lit scene will do. Set the control fairly low, down?past the point where you lose detail. Now gradually increase it until you see detail in the darkness. If the picture looks gray or washed out, you?ve brought your brightness too far up.

Color?and?tint
Generally speaking, you shouldn?t have to adjust these at all. These are holdovers from the old tube (CRT) TV days. With component and HDMI connections, the TV shouldn?t need adjustment to color or tint.

But so you know, color is color saturation. Set too high, people will look sunburned, and everything will seem cartoony. Tint adjusts the green/red in the image (Martian/lobster). Without specific color filters (that usually come with setup discs), you can?t adjust either of these settings these correctly. Skip.

Sharpness
This is a highly misleading control. Generally speaking, sharpness control adds enhancement to the image to make it appear sharp. Ironically, by doing so, it?s actually masking true fine detail in the image. This setting should be set as low as possible. Some TVs actually?soften?the image if you set it too low (bizarre, to be sure), so watch out for that. Look for dark lines on a bright background, like the?edges of buildings for instance. Lower this setting so there isn?t any ghost line next to the dark edge. This ghost line is called ?edge enhancement,? and goes a long way in making the image look artificial.

Once you get used to the naturalness of the image without edge enhancement, you?ll never go back.

Color temperature
This one is going to be tough. Not because it requires any labor on your part, it?s just going to do something to the image that at first is going to seem bad.

Color temperature is how bluish or reddish the image looks. Picture a typical scene of people walking down a street. Set the color temp too cool, and it will look like they?re walking down the street in winter, with that season?s normal bluish tones. Set the color temp too warm, and it will be a reddish warm day instead.

With most TVs, the ideal setting is ?warm? or ?low.? In some cases, this is too warm, and ?normal? is closer. If you?re changing the settings for the first time, and the TV was set in the ?cool? color temp mode, everything will look wrong, and even??normal? will appear to your eye as too warm. Give your eyes time to adjust. Watch on ?normal? for a few hours, and then ?cool? will seem incredibly blue.

Backlight
This is an LCD-specific control ??plasma TVs don?t have backlights.?Think of the backlight setting as a volume control for the image. Turn it up, and the entire picture (bright whites and dark blacks alike) get brighter. Turn it down, and everything gets darker.?

If you leave this turned all the way up, not only are you wasting energy, but at night your TV can be hard to watch. Modern LCDs are extremely bright, and watching such a small bright object in a dark room can create severe eye fatigue.

For critical viewing, or watching at night, the idea is to get the best black levels, while still creating a watchable image. Once you set contrast and brightness correctly, turn the backlight control all the way down. This will likely be too dark for most viewing. Turn it up to the point where it looks the best. Often, at night, this could be as low as 20 percent, depending on the TV.?During the day, you can?set this as high as you want.

Interestingly, no setup disc offers instructions on how to set this control.?Read more on this in our?buyer-beware article on TV backlights.

For more on what your HDTV?s controls do, read our?Guide to HDTV Settings.

By Request, My Family Eggnog Recipe - - Portland Food and Drink

Re-posted from 2009

This is a recipe my father used back in the 40?s. Many years ago, I found it among his things, but never made it until tonight. Now I will never make any other version. It?s really airy yet creamy, with just the right balance of booze.

I Twitter/Facebooked about this tonight, and am posting it here after several requests, after all, we still have New Year?s to go through!

Note that this recipe uses raw eggs. If this scares you, I doubt you?d be on this site anyway, but normal warnings apply. Use good, clean eggs and break them correctly (not on the side of a bowl).

Egg Nog

Beat 8 egg whites until stiff peaks.

Add 1/2 cup sugar and beat until incorporated. Set aside for a moment.

Beat 8 egg yolks and 1/2 cup sugar.

Put the whites back on the mixer, and fold in the beaten yolks

At a slower speed, add 1 qt heavy cream, 1 pt whole milk, beat some more.

Add 2 cups rum and 1/2 cup bourbon.

Take 20 mg Lipitor.

Pour into glasses, dust with freshly ground nutmeg

Call cab.

*uses raw egg. Follow normal precautions i.e. not drinking if you are pregnant (not that you would!) etc. Google for information if you are uncertain.

Luck, Colts clinch to cap amazing turnaround

Rookie leads team into playoffs a year after team finished 2-14

By DAVE SKRETTA

updated 6:20 p.m. ET Dec. 23, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The expectations placed upon Andrew Luck almost seemed unfair.

Being the heir to Peyton Manning in Indianapolis is heady stuff for a rookie taking the reins of a franchise that won two games last season.

Now, after guiding the Colts back to the playoffs - and breaking Cam Newton's single-season passing record for a first-year player - it's safe to say Luck exceeded just about all of them.

Luck threw for 205 yards Sunday, and his 7-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne on third-and-goal late in the fourth quarter gave the Colts a 20-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. That put them into the playoffs without worrying about anybody else.

"Would we have done it without him?" Colts interim coach Bruce Arians asked. "No."

Luck broke Newton's record of 4,051 yards passing in the second quarter. But it was extending his own rookie record for fourth-quarter comebacks to seven was more important.

The Chiefs had rallied behind Jamaal Charles' 226 yards rushing to tie the game 13-13 heading into the fourth quarter. The Colts' defense stuffed quarterback Brady Quinn on fourth-and-inches to give Luck a chance.

That's all he needed.

After a miserable stretch in which he connected on 1 of 13 passes, the fabulous freshman calmly led Indianapolis (10-5) downfield. He completed a key pass to T.Y. Hilton on third down and made two nice throws to Wayne before hitting the veteran in the back of the end zone.

"We had so many opportunities all game, especially on third down, that we squandered," Wayne said. "We wanted to get that done. That was the opportune time to do it."

Darius Butler returned an interception 32 yards for the Colts' other touchdown, helping them join the 2008 Miami Dolphins as the only teams to win at least 10 games after losing 14 or more the previous season.

Most of those wins have come under Arians, who has filled in admirably while Chuck Pagano underwent treatment for leukemia. Pagano is expected to rejoin the Colts this week.

"Mission accomplished. That's all I can say," Arians said. "Without getting emotional again, knowing that (Pagano) is going to be back Monday, the work week shouldn't be as stressful."

Charles' big day included an 86-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half. It was his second 200-yard game of the season, and came one week after he managed 10 yards on nine carries against Oakland.

"It was fun today, competing out there and doing it while we were trying to come back," Charles said. "It was fun going out there and putting out a performance like that."

Charles joined the Titans' Chris Johnson and former Lions great Barry Sanders as the only players with three runs of 80 or more yards in a season. His third career 200-yard game also set a franchise record, which he had shared with Larry Johnson.

Peyton Hillis added 101 yards on the ground for the Chiefs (2-13), who had 352 yards rushing in a losing effort - the first time that's happened in NFL history.

A big reason why was Quinn, who was just 10 of 22 for 162 yards with two interceptions.

"This game was without a doubt, 100 percent on my shoulders," he said. "You can't play the way I played today and win a football game."

His trouble began with the Chiefs' fifth offensive play, when he threw woefully behind Dexter McCluster - who wasn't even looking for the ball. Butler picked off the pass in stride, taking it untouched to the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

Kansas City managed a field goal by Ryan Succop, but he missed his next try and the Colts went the other direction to set up the first of Adam Vinatieri's two field goals.

Charles fumbled in the red zone later in the second quarter, and the Colts moved into Vinatieri's range for a 36-yard field goal and a 13-3 halftime lead.

Charles electrified a sparse crowd on the first play of the second half. He angled to the left and then found room down the sideline, cutting back toward the middle of the field and winning a foot-race with the Indianapolis defense for an 86-yard touchdown run.

The Chiefs were in position to take the lead later in the third quarter, but Quinn was picked off by Vontae Davis in the end zone. The defense forced a three-and-out and Kansas City was driving again before settling for Succop's tying 47-yard field goal.

The Chiefs got the ball back again late in the fourth quarter, but Quinn was stuffed on a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-inches from the Indianapolis 27.

That turned the ball over to Luck, who completed an 11-yard pass to T.Y. Hilton to convert a third down before he and Wayne won it.

"At times it looked a little bleak," Arians said. "Guys hung in there, made plays when they had to make them. Offensively we struggled, and then put together a drive, like we have all year."

Notes: Chiefs WR Terrance Copper (left knee) and DT Tyson Jackson (left foot) left with injuries. ... Wayne had five catches to become the fifth player in NFL history with four 100-catch seasons. He also became the 14th player to reach 13,000 yards receiving.

Randy Travis pleads not guilty to assault

Reuters file

By Peter Gicas, E!Online

"Look Heart, No Hands" singer Randy Travis is claiming he didn't use his, well, hands.?The country superstar pleaded not guilty on Friday in connection with a citation he was issued for simple assault outside a church in Plano, Texas, back in August.?

Travis himself appeared in court and a trial date was set for March 11, the Dallas Morning News reports.?

In defense of Randy Travis

On Aug. 23, Travis waded into the middle of an argument between an estranged husband and wife that turned physical, according to the Plano Police Department. When authorities arrived and questioned witnesses, they indicated they had seen a husband and wife involved in a verbal argument. Travis allegedly intervened, which is when he allegedly physically assaulted the husband, whose wife is a female friend of the Grammy winner.

In contrast to his previous run-ins with the law--like his arrest for driving while intoxicated on Aug. 7 -- there are no allegations that Travis was anything but clean and sober at the time.

Check out the top 10 mug shots of 2012?

In fact, the singer's lawyer, Larry Friedman, recently told E! News: "Randy is doing great. Life is good. He's given up drinking alcohol. He's drinking eight glasses of water a day or more. He's on a strict exercise regimen...He's in the best shape he's ever been in his life."

This fall Hurricane Sandy famously knocked out power in lower Manhattan. A friend, I'll call her Natalie, was stranded in her cold, dark apartment for days. Most New Yorkers hunkered down with gritty reserve. Yet when I finally reached Natalie, she was bright and cheery. She spoke not about the lack of water or frigid nights but about the romance of living by candlelight and the kindness of neighbors.

This issue's lead article on subconscious mental habits reminded me of Natalie. Our brain's biases can predispose us to view the world through either a positive filter?as with Natalie?or a negative one, as psychologist Elaine Fox explains in ?The Essence of Optimism,? on page 22. An emerging therapy promises to help tune depressive or anxious minds to a happier channel.

Our brain's unreliable interpretations can sometimes lead to grave consequences, especially in the courtroom. Time can distort eyewitness testimony, for example, and a leading interrogation can extract a false confession. Psychologist Scott O. Lilienfeld and attorney Robert Byron explore the sources of error that can push the gavel toward an unsound ruling in ?Your Brain on Trial.? Turn to page 44.

The behavioral sciences can also learn lessons from criminals snared by the law. In ?Wisdom from Psychopaths?? on page 36, psychologist Kevin Dutton interviews some of the scariest men in prison to discern how, in moderation, the common characteristics of psychopaths?such as charm, focus and ruthlessness?can spell success in various professions in the outside world.

If garnering insights from convicts seems counterintuitive, wait until you read about the mental benefits of first-person shooter games. Of course, concerns remain about how exposure to simulated violence affects players. But, as you will learn in journalist Lydia Denworth's ?Brain-Changing Games,? on page 28, recent studies show that these games improve visual acuity, spatial reasoning and decision making. Perhaps the optimists are right after all: every cloud has a silver lining.

How Coffee Can Boost Productivity in a Business Environment

This is a guest post by Jonny Rowntree.

Whether you?re an entrepreneur reading this or an employee at a well-established business, we?ve all completed a heavy night working after hours before that results in you heading off home to a very late night leading to the disappointing wakeup call from your alarm in the morning telling you that you?re late for work. You rush out and get to work on time but you realize you?ve had no breakfast and you?re running low on energy. Motivating yourself is key and you?re not even thinking about productivity in the workplace yet ? hell, you?re probably clockwatching while reading this.

How can you motivate yourself quickly and efficiently?
Before you start, create a plan of everything you need to do in a day?s work and list them based on priorities and due dates. Don?t create targets yet as they probably aren?t going to be as useful as you might think ? more on this later.

You should step out for air every couple of hours or so if your employer allows you to do so and you have time to. Not only will it give your eyes a break from the computer screen but you can live in real life for a minute or two with the rest of us rather than the virtual reality within your computer screen. This is the most effective option, especially if you work in a small office and don?t want to run the risk of being caught away from your desk.

If you can?t get out of the office, the next best thing is to walk around the office. Find something meaningful you need to do like visit someone at their desk to talk about something or collect a document from the printer but stretch out the time it takes by two minutes. This should give you sufficient time to wake up and open your senses a little more if you haven?t done so already. This is very effective if you work in a large building setup like a maze with multiple hallways leading to large rooms.
While you?re up on your feet, try grabbing something to eat. Fruit is a cheap and good way to help get the nutrients you need to wake up as well as containing a snack and a drink in one. If you can?t find fruit, turn to the vending machine. Most offices have coffee vending machines with items along with coffee that cost next to nothing for employees to purchase. Either of these options will provide you with something to help you wake up ? caffeine or sugar. Although it may not be the best option for your wallet, it certainly works for most.

No matter which tip you choose to follow from the list above, don?t procrastinate about it. By doing this, it can affect your work through stress whilst creating more incomplete work for you to struggle through after work hours resulting in that long stay at the office again.

To finish off, you should create goals to complement that list you made earlier as it will make managing time and projects easier on yourself. Remember to stick to them and don?t go off on a tangent. You should consider making them flexible and not sophisticated or weak as it?s important that you achieve something you have personally set so you leave work with a sense of personal achievement.

FTC toughens children's online privacy act

14 min.

Fourteen years after a children's online?privacy law was passed, the Federal Trade Commission Wednesday unveiled a beefed up version that takes into account the realities of youngsters in a world of smartphones, tablets and apps by further restricting the information that can be shared about them.

In its amendments to the?Children's Online Privacy Protection, meant to protect children under age 13,?the FTC said information like photos, videos and geolocation cannot?be collected without parental notice and consent. The commission also plans to "close a loophole that allowed kid-directed apps and websites to permit third parties to collect personal information from children through plug-ins without parental notice and consent."

The amendments to the law, approved in 1998, will go into effect July 1, 2013, the FTC said.?

"I am confident that the amendments to the COPPA Rule strike the right balance between protecting innovation that will provide rich and engaging content for children, and ensuring that parents are informed and involved in their children?s online activities," said FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz in a statement.

Among the proposed changes, COPPA would cover "persisitent?identifiers that can recognize users over time and across different websites or online services, such as IP addresses and mobile device IDs."

It would also close what the FTC described as a "loophole that allowed kid-directed apps and websites to permit third parties to collect personal information from children through plug-ins without parental notice and consent."

The commission also wants?website operators?to establish "reasonable procedures for data retention and deletion," and for website operators and?website operators and online service providers to?take "reasonable steps to release children?s personal information only to companies? that are capable of keeping it secure and confidential."

James Steyer, CEO of?Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization that monitors the impact of?media on children and families, said his group is pleased with?the amendments.

"Parents???not social networks or marketers???will remain the gatekeepers when it comes to their children's privacy not only online, but also on phones," he said in an emailed statement.

"These COPPA updates will provide a stern reminder to companies and developers that they need to do more to build a trustworthy online space for kids and families, and ensure that kids can benefit from tech innovation without exploitation."

Not everyone is pleased, though.

"We are pleased to see some moderation on the part of the FTC from the initial proposals earlier this year, but we are concerned that the FTC created too much of a regulatory burden through these expanded rules, and people will simply not create content for kids," said?Stephen Balkam, CEO of the?Family Online Safety Institute, in a statement. The Washington, D.C.-based?group that represents clients including Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Time Warner Cable, Verizon and Yahoo.

"We don?t want to sacrifice the great potential of amazing interactive online tools for marginal improvements in privacy protections," he said.

App developers with small teams???some as small as one???worry about the economic hardship of complying with the amendment, contending legal fees alone to could crush them.

"While we appreciate the efforts of chairman Leibowitz,?we are particularly concerned with his expectation that the industry will simply find a solution to the new rules," said?Morgan Reed, executive director of the?Association for Competitive Technology, in a statement.

"It is akin to jumping off a cliff with the plan to build the parachute on the way down.??While that may work for big companies, small companies lack the silk and line to build that parachute before they hit the ground."

Grant from Emily Landecker Foundation advances interdisciplinary study

Troy, N.Y. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute announced today a $480,000 gift from the Emily Landecker Foundation. The gift will establish the James P. Ferris Fellowship in Astrobiology, which will support graduate students in the School of Science pursuing research in the interdisciplinary field of astrobiology. The fellowship is named in honor of Ferris, an emeritus professor of chemistry and chemical biology, currently a senior research professor, and a member of the New York Center for Astrobiology at Rensselaer.

"The field of Astrobiology seeks to address some of the most fascinating questions in science: What makes a planet habitable? How did life on Earth begin? Is there life elsewhere?" said Laurie Leshin, dean of the School of Science at Rensselaer. "The James P. Ferris Fellowship in Astrobiology will allow us to attract the very best graduate students to Rensselaer to explore these compelling questions through their research. We are extremely grateful for the generous support of the Emily Landecker Foundation in establishing the fellowship, which is a fitting tribute to Jim Ferris' pioneering work in this exciting field."

The center places a strong emphasis on education and training, and graduate students with an interest in the field are offered strong opportunities for research under the mentorship of faculty members in the center, according to Professor Doug Whittet, director of the New York Center for Astrobiology at Rensselaer.

"Training the young scientists who will become future pioneers in astrobiology, space research, and related fields is an absolute priority for us," said Whittet. "The research carried out by faculty on our team provides unique opportunities for doctoral students. Our students gain not only experience and expertise within their chosen science discipline but also exposure to the interdisciplinary synergy that underpins this and other areas of science and technology today. The Ferris Fellowship presents a wonderful opportunity to expand our support for outstanding young scientists who will be the next generation of researchers and educators. It is also a wonderful tribute to Jim Ferris for his vital contributions to astrobiology and origins of life research."

The family-run foundation will endow the fellowship over four years. Additional annual gifts will be provided until the fellowship is fully funded, allowing the Institute to begin awarding the fellowship immediately to an incoming student in the Fall of 2013. Such a gift structure is commonly known as a "flexible endowment."

The foundation has made similar gifts in support of faculty positions and undergraduate study at several institutions attended by family members, said a trustee who wished to remain anonymous. The trustee, who is also an alumnus of Rensselaer, said the foundation wished to support graduate students and recognize the influence of Ferris, who taught a chemistry class that proved pivotal in the career of the trustee.

Although a chemist by training, Ferris has devoted his research to the origins of life. His laboratory has succeeded in creating long RNA chains from simple precursor molecules, using a natural clay mineral as a catalyst. These RNA macromolecules could lead to the origins of the first life on Earth. His research is currently focused on the step-by-step synthesis of RNA using different materials known to have existed early in Earth's history.

###

Supported by NASA, the $7 million New York Center for Astrobiology is a member of NASA's Astrobiology Institute (NAI), and is led by Rensselaer, in partnership with the University at Albany, Syracuse University, the University of Arizona, and the University of North Dakota. Researchers and students within the center seek to understand the chemical, physical, and geological conditions of early Earth that set the stage for life on our planet. They also look beyond our home planet to investigate whether the processes that prepared the Earth for life could be replicated elsewhere on Mars and other bodies in our solar system, for example, and on planets orbiting other stars.

Fungus responsible for 5 deaths in the wake of massive tornado

Monday, December 17, 2012

A fast growing, flesh-eating fungus killed 5 people following a massive tornado that devastated Joplin, Mo., according to two new studies based on genomic sequencing by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Health officials should be aware of infections caused by the fungus Apophysomyces, according to the studies, which tracked 13 people infected by the pathogen during the Class EF-5 tornado ? the most powerful category ? whose 200-plus mph winds plowed through Joplin on May 22, 2011, initially killing 160 and injuring more than 1,000.

The common fungus ? which lives in soil, wood or water ? usually has no effect on people. But once it is introduced deep into the body through a blunt trauma puncture wound, it can grow quickly if the proper medical response is not immediate, the studies said. Five of the 13 people infected through injuries suffered during the Joplin tornado died within two weeks.

"Increased awareness of fungi as a cause of necrotizing soft-tissue infections after a natural disaster is warranted ? since early treatment may improve outcomes," concluded one study published Dec. 6 in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Using whole genome sequencing, which decoded the billions of chemical letters in the fungus' DNA, TGen scientists concluded that the Joplin infections represented the largest documented cluster of Apophysomyces infections, according to a study published Nov. 27 in the journal PLOS One.

"This is one of the most severe fungal infections that anyone's ever seen," said David Engelthaler, Director of Programs and Operations for TGen's Pathogen Genomics Division. Engelthaler was the senior author of the PLOS One study, and a contributing author of the NEJM study.

"We're able to apply the latest in science and technology to explore these strange and dangerous pathogens, like we've never been able to before," said Engelthaler, adding that this is the latest in a series of collaborations between CDC and TGen. "This is the first peek into the genome of this dangerous fungus."

Dr. Benjamin Park, chief of the Epidemiology Team at the CDC's Mycotic Diseases Branch, said the victims were infected when their injuries from the tornado were contaminated with debris from the storm, including gravel, wood and soil, as well as the aerosolized fungus.

Without the multiple and deep wounds caused the by the storm, cases involving fungal infection are rare, said Dr. Park, the senior author of the NEJM study and a contributing author of the PLOS One study. "A typical hospital might normally see one case in a year."

Engelthaler said Apophysomyces infections rapidly ravage the body, quickly sealing off capillaries, shutting off the blood supply and leaving tissue to rot. Physicians try to get ahead of the infection by surgically removing sections of dead, damaged or infected tissue, a process called debridement.

For example, Engelthaler said, one victim who suffered a deep wound to the upper right chest required a new titanium rib cage after the fungus rapidly destroyed skin and bones.

"It's unlike anything you've ever seen before," said Engelthaler, a former State of Arizona Epidemiologist and former Arizona Biodefense Coordinator. "It's unreal. It looks like there is no way this person can be alive."

The studies show the need for rapid and accurate identification of the exact mold causing an infection, since only two FDA-approved drugs ? amphotericin B and posaconazole ? are commonly used against mucormycetes, the group of molds that includes Apophysomyces and causes mucormycosis.

"It is not known whether the outcomes for these case patients would have been different if mucormycete-active agents had been used initially," said the NEJM study. "The timely diagnosis of mucormycosis is essential for guiding therapy, because the early initiation of appropriate anti-fungal medication and aggressive surgical debridement are associated with improved outcomes."

Both the NEJM and PLOS One studies said whole genome sequencing could lead to better diagnosis and a better understanding of this pathogen.

TGen's DNA sequencing identified Apophysomyces in all 13 of the Joplin cases. The DNA analysis also established that several strains of Apophysomyces were involved in the outbreak, giving scientists further clues that this fungus was well established in the area, and probably had been so for a long time.

"These disasters put us at risk for exposure to organisms that are around us, but don't normally cause disease," Engelthaler said. "There's clearly an entire world out there that we're not seeing on a regular basis. It takes a severe event like this tornado for us to come face-to-face with some of the more dangerous pathogens out there."
