HPV vaccine for boys has 'good start' in 1st year

ATLANTA (AP) ? When the HPV vaccine was first recommended for boys, health officials worried it would be an unusually hard sell. But a new report suggests that might not be the case.

About 1 in 5 boys got at least one of the recommended three doses last year, relatively good for a new vaccine aimed at adolescents.

The shots are largely intended not to protect boys from disease, but to stop them from spreading a sexually transmitted virus to girls that could cause cervical cancer.

The vaccine hasn't been very popular among girls. The government report issued Thursday is the first real sense of how many boys are getting the shots.

"It's a good start," said Shannon Stokley, a vaccination expert with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Introduced in 2006, the vaccine protects against human papillomavirus, which is spread during sex. Most infections go away on their own, without people developing symptoms. But the virus can cause cervical cancer in females, genital warts in both sexes, and some other, less common conditions like throat and anal cancer.

The vaccine was first recommended for girls ages 11 and 12 because it works best if given before a teen starts to have sex. In 2011, it was also recommended for boys that age to help prevent the virus's spread.

The CDC report covers vaccination rates for last year, the first full year since the shots were advised for boys. It's based on telephone calls to families for about 19,000 boys and girls ages 13 to 17.

About 21 percent of the boys had gotten at least one of the three doses. Less than 7 percent were fully vaccinated.

The rates look relatively good compared to the initial rates for some other vaccines aimed at adolescents. For example, the initial rate for a meningococcal vaccine was just 12 percent.

Rates tend to start low when a vaccine is first recommended and build after. So the HPV numbers for boys are reason to be optimistic, said the CDC's Dr. Melinda Wharton, although she added a word of caution.

"Given how the coverage level has stalled for girls, though, a solid start isn't enough," she said.

For girls, the initial rate for at least one HPV shot was 25 percent. Last year, it was about 54 percent and hadn't changed much from the previous two years. Only a third was fully immunized with all three doses last year.

"We'd really like to do much better with boys and girls," Wharton said.

Wozniak: Apple Harus Buat Ponsel Selain iPhone!

Jakarta -

A major cause of age-related memory loss identified: Potentially reversible

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Scientists have found that the deficiency of a protein called RbAp48 in the hippocampus is a significant contributor to age-related memory loss and that this form of memory loss is reversible. The study, conducted in postmortem human brain cells and in mice, also offers the strongest causal evidence that age-related memory loss and Alzheimer's disease are distinct conditions.

At an Aug. 23 event at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., President Barack Obama discusses his plan to make college more affordable. (Jessica Kourkounis, Getty Images)

Was it heartening to hear someone finally proposing a bold new effort to rein in exploding college tuition costs?

You bet.

Do we have serious concerns about President Obama's plan, announced last week, to pressure colleges to reduce costs?

Yes, we do.

The president has proposed a system of ranking colleges based on factors such as cost, debt, graduation rates and student earnings after they leave college.

The federal government would then leverage its student aid, giving bigger subsidies to students attending schools that scored higher.

Broadly, we support the notion that the most effective higher education institutions should get the most public support. In an era of limited resources, it makes a lot of sense.

And who could disagree with the president saying every American family should be able to afford higher education ? or find the necessary assistance to go?

However, the efficacy of higher education is likely to prove difficult to measure. And we're concerned about the federal government defining success.

There could be many unintended effects of linking aid to a government ranking system.

Meanwhile, higher education already is being pressured by trends that could restrain tuition inflation and we would hate to see any such movement disrupted.

Not only does the rapid development of online classes have the potential to bring down costs, but resistance to soaring tuition is growing among students and parents, too.

To be sure, the White House plan, particularly the ranking system, is still in the conceptual phase.

It's possible that these concerns and others could be satisfactorily ironed out. But that is far from certain, as is the idea that Congress could be persuaded to approve linking aid to rankings.

What we do know is that creating such a system will be a difficult and complex task. And the stakes for getting it right are very high.

Bass says no 'N Sync reunion tour; dishes on Cyrus

NEW YORK (AP) ? Don't get your heart set on anything more than the 90-second 'N Sync reunion seen on the MTV Video Music Awards. The performance marked the first time the band played together in 11 years, and also the last time they'll do it, at least for a while.

"It would be lovely to do it, but we've got nothing planned," Lance Bass told The Associated Press on Monday between breaks of his Sirius XM show, "Dirty Pop With Lance Bass."

One reason is that Justin Timberlake begins his solo tour this fall, and Bass says the closest he'll get to the stage is a seat in the audience.

"Who knows what will happen when he's off tour. It's simply not part of the conversation right now. We just focused on that one performance," Bass said. "If we did anything like that, I think we would come up with something real special where we could actually call it 'The Reunion.'"

Bass, along with fellow boy-band mates Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and JC Chasez, joined Timberlake, who was already performing at the VMAs on Sunday night. They wanted to do something special for Timberlake for receiving The Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, the VMA's equivalent of a lifetime achievement award.

While the last 15 seconds of their reunion performance made Bass feel nauseous, getting to the stage was an adrenaline rush.

"We had to perform in the middle of the arena, so there was no way of getting us out there without being seen. So they dressed us in big ole hoodies to pretend we were the stagehands. So we would push out the stage and do all the stagehand stuff until we got to the area and hid out beneath a staircase," Bass said. "That was my favorite part."

Bass said just before they stopped performing, he felt queasy from nerves.

As for the show, Bass shared his view on the evening's most controversial performance when Miley Cyrus stripped down to a nude bikini, erotically grinded with Robin Thicke and made suggestive gestures with a foam hand with a pointed finger.

The singer said his young nieces and nephews watched the VMAs for the first time to see their uncle perform in 'N Sync.

"I didn't know I had to warn them that their little Hannah Montana was going to be naked and humping a finger," Bass said.

During a commercial break, he spoke more of the incident.

"I think it's her thing. I think she shocked a lot of her younger fans, especially the parents, who might not be so happy with her thing, and she's just being Miley," Bass said.

"I mean it is a big deal. Unfortunately I think young artists, especially coming from a Disney background, especially want to change that image. ... Lady Gaga does it. Everyone is like what can I do just to really shock people. But Lady Gaga and a lot of people have really missed the mark a lot where it goes over people's heads."

NFL cuts: Colts release 11 players, Lawrence Sidbury to IR

The Colts are preparing for Tuesday's 75-man roster deadline.

It's been a busy day of roster moves for the Indianapolis Colts, who have announced the?release of eleven players?and placed linebacker Lawrence Sibury on the injured reserve list,?according to Mike Chappell.

The eleven roster casualties include cornerbacks Johnny Adams, Allen Chapman and Teddy Williams, guard Danous Estenor, defensive tackle Kellen Heard, kicker Brandon McManus, running back Davin Meggett, linebacker C.O. Prime, center Rick Schmeig, safety Ashante Williams and wide receiver Maurice Williams.

None of the players released were ever drafted by the Colts, and seven had been signed as undrafted free agents this offseason. Only Heard, Meggett and Teddy Williams were on the roster last season.

The moves come in preparation of the league's upcoming Aug. 27 roster cut deadline, by which time all teams are required to reach the mandated 75-man roster. With the moves on Sunday, the Colts are now at 78 players.

Teams then have until Aug. 31 to reduce their active roster to a maximum of 53 players.

Royal Mail celebrates British Auto Legends with special stamp ...

Lotus Esprit stamp from the Royal Mail

We love cars because they're fast and exciting. The postal service, not so much. But at least the mail is reliable, which is a lot more than you could say for most classic British cars, like the ones which the Royal Mail in Great Britain is celebrating with this special philatelic collection.

Launched this year on the occasion of Aston Martin's centenary and the 150th birthday of Sir Henry Royce, the British Auto Legends stamp collection includes the 1961 Jaguar E-Type, 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, 1963 Aston Martin DB5, 1968 Morgan Plus 8, 1976 Lotus Esprit and 1962 MG MGB as part of the six-stamp Thoroughbreds set. Another four-stamp Workhorses mini sheet features the Morris Minor Van, Austin FX4 black cab, Ford Anglia 105E and Land Rover Defender 110.

Rather than create them from stock images, the Royal Mail commissioned veteran automotive photographer Andrew Mann (since our own Drew Phillips was busy) to capture pristine examples of the cars selected. And like all special stamps issued by the Royal Mail, Queen Elizabeth II approved the final designs herself, and apparently didn't object to the absence of her own Daimler and Bentley (or any Daimler or Bentley, for that matter) from the collection. The stamps are available to the estimated 2.5 million stamp collectors in the UK by phone, online or at any of the 10,000 post offices across the UK.

University of Alabama former football star John Croyle to preach at Church on the Lake

GUNTERSVILLE, Alabama ? Summer services for the interdenominational Church on the Lake conclude Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, with John Croyle, founder and director of Big Oak Ranch for Boys & Girls.

Croyle will speak at the open-air pavilion at the Marshall Baptist Retreat Center on Guntersville Lake. Services begin at 10 a.m.?

Croyle, a high school All-American player who went on to star on one of Bear Bryant's national championship teams, gave up a professional football career to start the group home for children.

Summer services, which feature sermons from a variety of church and community leaders each summer, have been held on Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day for nearly 50 years.

The informal Sunday services follow an old-time church service structure with hymns and feature a different speaker every week.

The series is coordinated by Tony Reppucci, sales director of Bentley Automotive Group in Huntsville, and founder and director of Joshua Twenty-Four ministry.

The retreat center is located on the banks of the Tennessee River, just off of U.S. Hwy 431 a few miles north of Guntersville between the 301 and 302 mile marker.

Mexico beats Connecticut 15-14 in LLWS consolation

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) ? Brandon Montes, Ramon Mendoza, Saul Favela, and Miguel Artalejo hit home runs, and Tijuana, Mexico held off Westport, Conn., 15-14 Sunday in the consolation game of the Little League World Series.

Mexico's World Series run ended with a 3-2 loss to Japan for the international title on Saturday. But the final barrage of power hitting sent the Tijuana team home with something to smile about.

Chad Knight two home runs and drove in seven runs, Harry Azadian had a three-run homer, and Matt Brown and Matt Stone had solo shots for Connecticut, which lost 12-1 to Chula Vista, Calif., in the U.S. title game on Saturday,

Mexico won it with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, keyed by Artalejo's three-run homer. It was just enough because Knight hit a three-run shot with two outs in the top of the sixth.

High school football previews: Class 3A

CLASS 3A

DISTRICT 1-3A

EPISCOPAL

Head coach: Mark Brunell (first year).

Last year: 3-6.

Key returners: Michael Burgstiner (WR, Sr., 6-5, 180); Matthew Pina (WR/DB, Sr., 5-7, 130); Zachary Leggett (OL, Sr., 5-10, 230); Daniel Fisher (RB, Jr., 5-7, 150).

Key newcomers: Jackson Bradley (QB, Jr., 6-1, 210);?Geoffrey Heekin (LB, Sr., 5-11, 230).

Outlook: The hiring of Brunell, who?s striving for more run-pass balance than past Episcopal teams, is the big story. Squeezed out in the 2012 postseason chase, the Eagles might not have the bulk of their district rivals, but the roster has nearly doubled in manpower ? a clear step in the right direction.

?

PROVIDENCE

Head coach: Bobby Raulerson (third year, 11-10).

Last year: 6-5; lost 54-7 in regional semifinal to Madison County.

Key returners: Bobby Grant (OL, Sr., 6-1, 270); Josh Hayes (LB, Sr., 5-11, 180); Josh Portillo (DL, Sr., 6-1, 270); David Sharpe (OL, Sr., 6-7, 300).

Key newcomers: Augie DeBiase (QB, So., 6-2, 215); Will Mitchell (RB, So., 5-8, 180).

Outlook: The line is the bulwark of the steady Stallions, and two-sport star Sharpe, among the most recruited players in the Southeast, leads the way. If they reinforce a defense that allowed 30 points six times last year, transfers Mitchell and DeBiase give Providence backfield skills that may steer them toward another playoff trip.

?

TRINITY CHRISTIAN

Head coach: Verlon Dorminey (23rd year, 208-58).

Last year: 9-2; lost 22-21 in regional semifinal to Pensacola Catholic.

Key returners: Victor Alexander (LB, Jr., 5-10, 220); Isaiah Ford (WR, Sr., 6-2, 175); Kavaris Harkless (OT, Sr., 6-5, 280); Jeff Holland (LB, Jr., 6-2, 230); Kevin Toliver (DB, Jr., 6-2, 190).

Key newcomers: Jaques Riles (QB, Sr., 6-1, 170); Andre Smith (LB, Jr., 6-0, 221).

Outlook: The goal is clear: The Conquerors, stunned by last year?s first-round exit, expect a deep playoff run in 2013. Elite defenders range from sideline to sideline, so if the Trinity Wing-T offense clicks as usual, this team could be playing into December.

Sides agree to drop Paula Deen discrimination suit

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) ? Lawyers signed a deal Friday to drop a discrimination and sexual harassment lawsuit against celebrity cook Paula Deen, who was dumped by the Food Network and other business partners after she said under oath that she had used racial slurs in the past.

A document filed in U.S. District Court in Savannah said both sides agreed to drop the lawsuit "without any award of costs or fees to any party." No other details of the agreement were released. The judge in the case had not signed an order to finalize the dismissal.

Former employee Lisa Jackson last year sued Deen and her brother, Bubba Hiers, saying she suffered from sexual harassment and racially offensive talk and employment practices that were unfair to black workers during her five years as a manager of Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House. Deen is co-owner of the restaurant, which is primarily run by her brother.

The dismissal deal came less than two weeks after Judge William T. Moore threw out the race discrimination claims, ruling Jackson, who is white, had no standing to sue over what she said was poor treatment of black workers. He let Jackson's claims of sexual harassment stand, but the deal drops those also.

The lawsuit would be dismissed "with prejudice," which means it can't be brought again with the same claims.

"While this has been a difficult time for both my family and myself, I am pleased that the judge dismissed the race claims and I am looking forward to getting this behind me," Deen said in a statement Friday.

Jackson also issued a statement that backpedaled on assertions that Deen held "racist views."

"I assumed that all of my complaints about the workplace environment were getting to Paula Deen, but I learned during this matter that this was not the case," Jackson said in the statement, which was confirmed by her attorney. "The Paula Deen I have known for more than eight years is a woman of compassion and kindness and will never tolerate discrimination or racism of any kind toward anyone."

It wasn't Jackson's racism allegations, but rather Deen's own words that ended up causing serious damage to her public image and pocketbook. The lawsuit got little public attention for more than a year until Jackson's lawyer questioned Deen under oath in May. A transcript of the deposition became public in June, and it caused an immediate backlash against Deen.

Deen was asked if she has ever used the N-word. "Yes, of course," Deen replied, though she added: "It's been a very long time."

Within a few days, the Food Network didn't renew Deen's contract and yanked her shows off the air. Smithfield Foods, the pork producer that paid Deen as a celebrity endorser, dropped her soon after.

Retailers including Wal-Mart and Target said they'll no longer sell Deen's products and publisher Ballantine scuttled plans for her upcoming cookbook even though it was the No. 1 seller on Amazon. Deen also parted company with her longtime New York agent, Barry Weiner, who had worked to turn Deen into a comfort-food queen since she was little more than a Savannah restaurant owner and self-publisher of cookbooks.

The judge issued an order Friday saying he still plans a hearing on whether Jackson's lead attorney, Matthew Billips, should be sanctioned for what Deen's lawyers called unprofessional conduct in the case. In earlier court filings Deen's lawyers said Billips threatened Deen with embarrassing media exposure, made inappropriate comments about the cook and the lawsuit on Twitter and purposefully asked Deen embarrassing questions that weren't relevant to the case during her deposition.

However, a filing by Deen's attorneys asked the judge to drop their motion for sanctions against Billips.

Billips declined to comment on the lawsuit resolution other than to say "the matter has been amicably resolved." Deen attorneys Grace Speights and Harvey Weitz did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Forbes magazine last year ranked Deen as the fourth-highest-earning celebrity cook last year, figuring she had hauled in $17 million. Her company Paula Deen Enterprises generates total annual revenue of nearly $100 million, according to Burt Flickinger III, president of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group.

In her statement Friday, Deen said that "those who truly know how I live my life know that I believe in kindness and fairness for everyone." She also promised to take a closer look at how her employees are treated.

"I look forward to getting back to doing what I love," she said.

In her lawsuit, Jackson had claimed Hiers frequently made jokes containing racial slurs at work and prohibited black workers from using the restaurant's front entrance and customer restrooms. She said she was personally offended because she had biracial nieces.

Attorneys for Deen said in court filings that Jackson's lawsuit was based on "scurrilous and false claims."

They said before Jackson filed suit, she threatened to embarrass Deen publicly unless she paid the ex-employee "huge sums of money."

Workers' Compensation: Health Law Adds New Expense For ...

Today's post was shared by Kaiser Health News and comes from www.kaiserhealthnews.org Farm labor contractors across California -- the nation's biggest agricultural engine -- are anxiously studying a provision of the Affordable Care Act, which will require hundreds of thousands of field workers to be covered by health insurance.

And while the requirement to cover workers was recently delayed until 2015, the contractors, who provide farmers with armies of field workers, say they are already preparing for the potential cost, inconvenience, and liability the new law will bring to their business, which typically operates on a slender profit margin.

"I've been to at least a dozen seminars on the Affordable Care Act since February," said Chuck Herrin, owner of Sunrise Farm Labor, a contractor based here. "If you don't take the right approach, you're wiped out."

The effects of the new law could be profound. Insurance brokers and health providers familiar with California's $43.5 billion agricultural industry estimate that meeting the law's minimum health plan will cost about $1 per hour per employee worked in the field.

"Everybody is afraid of the cost," said J. Edward McClements, Jr., a senior vice president at Barkley Insurance and Risk Management, based in Oxnard, about 60 miles west of Los Angeles. "It's difficult when you've got 1,000 workers who've never had health insurance before, to get an idea of what their costs will be."

The concern is felt from vineyards in Napa County to the almond orchards outside Coalinga, a Central Valley town best...

This Artist Paints With Pigments Made From Toxic Sludge

Nature in all its unspoiled glory has played muse to many artists through the years, but the ever-increasing ways we?ve sullied the earth have, themselves, offered new inspiration for eco-conscious creative types. John Sabraw, an artist and professor at Ohio University, was checking out some abandoned coal mines in his home state during a sustainability immersion course and was struck by strange gradients in the runoff. ?They?re a little clear right at the beginning, then the whole rest of the stream is just yellow once the suspended metals begin to oxidize," he explained to me.

Melzer wins after Monfils retires in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) ? Austria's Jurgen Melzer didn't want to spend a week in New York with all the craziness surrounding the start of the U.S. Open.

Instead, Melzer spent the week training and playing in the relative quiet of North Carolina ? and came away with a champion's trophy and a big jump up the world rankings.

Melzer won the Winston-Salem Open title on Saturday at the Wake Forest Tennis Center after Frenchman Gael Monfils retired because of an injury early in the second set.

Melzer earned his fifth career ATP tournament title and first this season. His ranking will improve five spots to No. 27 on Monday, when the U.S. Open begins at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

"I'm playing great tennis at the moment," Melzer said. "A week ago, I wasn't a happy camper. I hadn't played well, I had been struggling. It's been the small things, but I'm getting my confidence back and playing well again. That's important, especially being a week before a Grand Slam. It's very important to get that confidence.

"I usually don't like to play the week before a slam, but this has been a perfect preparation week. Being in New York a week just gets you crazy."

The left-handed Melzer led 6-3, 2-1 after breaking Monfils' serve in the second set. During the changeover, Monfils received treatment on his left abdominal muscle and hip before opting to retire.

"I started to feel it yesterday, and today I woke up pretty sore," said Monfils, who hugged Melzer at courtside as word of his retirement was announced. "We worked on it before the match, and it wasn't pretty bad. It was sore, but I felt I could play and finish it. But I tried to serve 100 percent, and that was it."

On Friday, Monfils ? who has struggled with injuries after being ranked No. 7 in 2011 ? was bothered by a pulled muscle in his left side during his semifinal win against Fernando Verdasco of Spain. In the second set Saturday against Melzer, he bent over several times and struggled for velocity on his first serve.

"It was like electricity coming up (my side)," said Monfils, whose status for the U.S. Open is now unclear. "It felt like something snapped. It was that quick, and it was really painful.

"At the end, I thought 'OK, I'll fight and I'll handle it' ... but at that time, it was better to listen to my body instead of my mind."

Said Melzer: "He wasn't pulling any of his serves like he could have, but from the baseline he was playing normal. I didn't really know what was going on. He's such a great player that I was trying to focus on my thing, which I'd done pretty well this week.

"Nobody wants to win a finals like that. You want to be out there competing, but at the end of the day you take the title. I was looking forward to it. It's a pity it had to end like that."

Still, the Winston-Salem Open title marked a turnaround of sorts for the 32-year-old Melzer, once ranked as high as No. 8 in the world standings. He made it to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon last June, but an injured shoulder cost him a month away from the tour.

Since his return, Melzer had lost his first match in three straight tournaments ? which led to the hiring of Spain's Galo Blanco as his coach two weeks ago ? before his title run at Winston-Salem.

"He took me on in a tough moment of my career," Melzer said. "I hadn't won any matches after Wimbledon, and I played terrible at Cincinnati (the tournament before the Winston-Salem Open). But we came back the week after to sit here with the trophy."

In rare openness, China microblogs Bo Xilai trial

BEIJING (AP) ? Much of China was riveted to the stream of microblog updates from the trial of disgraced politician Bo Xilai ? even a TV anchorwoman on a live national program checked her cellphone for the latest posting.

The Jinan Intermediate People's Court in eastern China began its blow-by-blow updates on its Sina Weibo microblog 21 minutes before the trial opened Thursday and updated steadily through the day, including details on testimony, photos and even an audio clip from a key witness.

"When the court's Weibo is the only source of information about the trial, is it wrong to check my cellphone?" anchorwoman Yang Shu of Phoenix TV wrote on her own microblog. "It's better to announce the information with my head down than having nothing to say with my head up. This is the era of new media."

Followers of the court's Weibo postings jumped from 70,000 to more than 300,000 during the day, and some posts were reposted tens of thousands of times, including a photo of Bo standing trial in a white shirt with his hands crossed in front of himself without a pair of cuffs.

The display of openness is unusual for the Chinese justice system of recent decades, though the 1981 trial of Mao Zedong's wife and other members of the "Gang of Four" was televised. This kind of political trial is normally considered orchestrated political theater with a foregone conclusion of guilt. Some reporters for state media were also allowed in the courtroom.

Zhang Zhi'an, a journalism professor at Sun Yet-sen University in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, said the posts were a clever move by the court in that they offered the appearance of openness while retaining the control of information.

"The postings could be selective," Zhang said.

Beijing-based rights lawyer Pu Zhiqiang said the posts did not make up for the fact that Bo had been barred from meeting with his family for 18 months and could not choose his own lawyers.

"Without fair procedures, how can you have a fair outcome?" Pu said.

Nevertheless, the Weibo posts mark progress in transparency, said Yang Dali, a political scientist at the University of Chicago Center in Beijing.

"It is a great move by the Jinan court. In many ways, it has lent a lot more credibility to this case," Yang said. "You read the case, and you can get a sense of different personalities. It is a very riveting case so far."

The court made 59 posts on Thursday, portraying an orderly but lively courtroom with lengthy recounts of the exchanges among the defendant, his lawyers, prosecutors, witnesses and the judge.

In one exchange, prosecutors accused Bo of taking bribes from business associate Tang Xiaolin. Bo flatly denied the accusation. "The matter of me taking money on three occasions, as Tang Xiaolin said, does not exist," he said, adding that he had once admitted the bribe-taking only because of "mental pressure."

Prosecutors later responded: "Judge, the defendant has not provided truthful testimony in this court. On the issue of Tang Xiaolin giving money three times to the defendant, the prosecution will provide evidence that will verify it."

At one point, Bo appeared to thoroughly cross-examine a businessman who alleged he paid bribes to the politician.

Shanghai-based lawyer Si Weijiang said the court's posts offered more details than expected. "Bo's challenges to the allegations were quite powerful, and they are based on his personality, and he is not an easy person," he said.

Xbox One launch game Ryse: Son of Rome includes microtransactions

ryse_01

The last time we talked about microtransactions linked to a console game was back in February. Dead Space 3 shipped with over $50 worth of DLC and microtransactions in place, which although not essential, was very useful if you has the cash to spend. Now it looks as though microtransactions are set to make the jump to next-gen, with Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome incorporating them for armor pack unlocks.

More specifically, the multiplayer experience included with Ryse uses an armor-based progression system. In order to get that armor you need to earn gold, which you do simply by playing multiplayer. Your gold is used to purchase booster packs, which take the form of loot that may contain new armor. The booster packs are split into Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiers. Each tier costs more than the last, but there?s also more chance of you getting rare items in a Silver over a Bronze pack, and Gold over Silver.

Where microtransactions come into play is if you don?t have enough in-game gold to purchase the pack you want. If you have 10,000 gold and the Gold booster pack costs 15,000, you can opt to make up the difference with a real-world cash purchase on on-game gold.

Apparently the multiplayer in Ryse has been designed to allow the player to grind for more gold and experience, but you can speed up the process simply by paying. So if you have the cash to spend, you could become quite a well-equipped character without having to play the game for very long. How much Ryse will charge for gold has yet to be announced, though.

Gamers interested in playing Ryse: Son of Rome can take comfort in the fact microtransactions are just a feature of multiplayer, not the single-player experience. But this does act as a reminder that developers/publishers are experimenting with offering incentives and shortcuts for spending money while you play, rather than just to purchase a game in the first place.

Now read: All future EA games will contain micro-transactions

North, South Korea hold talks on family reunions

North and South Korea held talks Friday on resuming reunions for families separated for decades by the 1950-53 Korean War as they seek to build on a recent easing of cross-border tensions.

The reunion programme was suspended after the North's shelling of a South Korean border island in November 2010, and its resumption after three years would mark a symbolic but important step.

The talks, between North and South Korean Red Cross officials, took place in the border "truce" village of Panmunjom, where the 1953 ceasefire ending hostilities was signed.

"The issue of separated families is one of the most urgent tasks," the head of the South's Red Cross delegation told reporters on his way to the venue.

"I will do my best to relieve their pain," he was quoted as saying by the Yonhap news agency.

An official with the South's Unification Ministry said the morning session focused on the date and venue of any initial reunion, as well as the number of family members who might be selected to take part.

The talks were almost derailed by a debate over the venue, with the North wanting the meeting to be held at its Mount Kumgang resort.

As well as the family reunions, the North is keen to restart South Korean tours to Mount Kumgang, but Seoul insists that the two issues should not be linked together.

The South suspended the tours in 2008 after a North Korean soldier shot dead a female tourist who strayed into a restricted zone.

The push to restart the reunions was initiated last week by South Korean President Park Geun-Hye, who urged Pyongyang to "open its heart" and agree to kickstart the programme in time for next month's Chuseok holiday -- when Korean families traditionally gather together.

Millions of Koreans were left separated by the war, which sealed the peninsula's division. Most have died without having had a chance to meet family members last seen six decades ago.

About 72,000 South Koreans -- nearly half of them aged over 80 -- are still alive and wait-listed for a chance to join the highly competitive family reunion events, which select only up to a few hundred participants each time.

At the reunions, North and South Koreans typically meet in the North for two or three days before the South Koreans -- many in tears -- head home again.

For those too infirm to travel, reunions via video conferencing have been arranged in recent years.

The reunion programme began in 2000 following an historic inter-Korean summit. Sporadic events since then have seen around 17,000 people briefly reunited.

The last such meeting took place in late 2010, before the North's shelling of Yeonpyeong island.

Inter-Korean relations have showed signs of improving recently after months of heightened military tensions that followed the North's nuclear test in February.

The two sides have already agreed to work on reopening their Kaesong joint industrial zone shut down in April, and the South has accepted Pyongyang's proposal for talks on the Mount Kumgang tours -- although not until late September.

Seoul has sought to play down expectations of a sudden turnaround in relations with the North, saying the recent breakthroughs are just the start of what will be a long, incremental progress.

President Park has also made it clear that any substantial dialogue on strategic issues can only take place if North Korea offers a tangible commitment to abandon its nuclear weapons programme.

Pyongyang has said it will never allow its nuclear deterrent to be used as a bargaining chip.

Stop the CEO March on Washington

In these closing days of summer, a growing number of news stories have interrupted our final days at the beach and asked us to pause and remember the 50th Anniversary of the historic March on Washington that occurred on August 28, 1963.

Dr. Martin Luther King and the quarter of a million others who marched with him to our nation?s capital turned the tide toward greater equality through persistent organizing and tireless action.

In the decades that have followed, those struggling for justice are not the only ones who have rallied in Washington. CEOs from Wall Street and large corporations have of course been a powerful presence. They don?t march to Washington but instead fly in corporate jets. They don?t come with millions by their side, but rather with millions in their pockets. And they don?t come to demand greater inclusion and opportunity for all, but for more tax breaks for their businesses, to be paid for by cuts to services provided to ordinary families.

One such group is Fix the Debt, a group of powerful CEOs lobbying for permanent tax cuts for the trillions of dollars they?ve stashed offshore, and for cuts to entitlement programs like Social Security.

Thankfully, these CEOs are not the only ones on the move this August. National People?s Action (NPA), a powerful grassroots action group, has been calling attention to four powerful corporations in their Summer of the CEO Campaign. NPA has targeted the leaders of Bank of America, General Electric, Macy?s and Verizon ? all of whom are members of the Fix the Debt campaign.

These CEOs have nothing to lose by calling for a roll-back of Social Security benefits. They all have multi-million dollar corporate pensions to rely on when they retire. Take General Electric?s CEO Jeffrey Immelt, whose $59.3 million GE retirement account could be converted into an annuity that would deliver him a $346,964 monthly retirement check starting at age 65.

Immelt is not alone in putting the gold in the golden years. With nearly $20 million in his corporate retirement plan, Macy?s CEO Terry Lundgren will not need to rely on Social Security (or those Macy?s discount coupons) when he retires.

Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam won?t care about the price increases in his cell phone plan. He?s got $9.8 million in his Verizon retirement account. And Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan has no worries about his mortgage payment, with $8.4 million in his retirement stash.

Washington policymakers have become too focused on the millions of dollars brought by CEOs. They should pay more attention to groups like National People?s Action. This year, as the Institute for Policy Studies celebrates our own 50th anniversary, we have named them as one of our ?Top 50 Allies.? We are proud to work with NPA and other social justice groups who remind us of this nation?s proud history of people power overcoming the power of money.?

Millions of people acting together can still beat millions of dollars.

Nvidia Shield Packs a Punch, but Needs More Games - AllThingsD

For all intents and purposes, your smartphone and tablet are also handheld gaming systems. Today you can play titles that were once reserved for traditional game consoles on the same device you use for phone calls, Web browsing, social networking and navigation. We?ve come a long way, baby.

But there are still some advantages to dedicated gaming handhelds like the Nintendo 3DS and Sony PlayStation Vita ? physical controls, for example. And now there?s a new entrant in the field, the Nvidia Shield.

The Shield is an Android-based portable game console that features a five-inch touchscreen attached to a game controller. You can use it to play games made for Google?s Android operating system, or you can stream PC games to it (with caveats). It also offers all the features of a tablet running the latest version of Android.

To be clear, the Shield is, first and foremost, a gaming device, and it?s a powerful one at that. (If you?re unfamiliar with Nvidia, the company makes the chips that provide the graphics power in many of today?s Android devices and Windows PCs.) I played at least half a dozen games on the Shield, including Grand Theft Auto III and the third-person shooter game Max Payne, and the handheld offered some of the smoothest game play I?ve seen on a mobile device. Graphics looked great on the sharp screen, and sound boomed from powerful speakers. All that said, I wouldn?t recommend the Shield to everyone.

For one, it costs $300, which will alienate casual gamers right off the bat. If you?re only playing titles like Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies, stick with your smartphone or tablet. Second, as with other Android-based game systems I?ve tested, including the $40 Green Throttle, Shield is limited by its selection of games. Though you can play any game available in the Google Play Store, only about 100 titles work with the Shield?s controller. Also, the PC-streaming feature requires that you have a PC equipped with a specific type of Nvidia graphics processor and a high-end wireless router.

P1040450

The game support for this device will likely grow with time. But given the restrictions and its expensive price tag, its appeal will be limited to a small group of hard-core gamers.

The best way to describe the Shield?s design is to imagine an Xbox controller with a five-inch touchscreen attached to it. Compared to the Nintendo 3DS and Sony PlayStation Vita, it?s clunky and hefty, weighing in at just over a pound. But the finger grooves and rubberized texture on the bottom of the device make it easier and more comfortable to hold than a full-size tablet when playing games.

Of course, the dedicated game controls help, too. Below the display, you?ll find one set of buttons, which includes a directional pad; two joysticks; A, B, X and Y buttons; a shortcut to the Shield game center; and a home button to return to the main Android screen, among others. Along the top edge of the device are a pair of trigger and shoulder buttons, an HDMI port, a MicroUSB connector and headphone jack.

When not playing games, you can use some of these controls to navigate through Android?s menus or input text using the onscreen keyboard. But using the joystick to move to different letters and then pressing A to select doesn?t make for efficient typing, so you can use the touchscreen. This isn?t particularly comfortable, either, though, since you have to reach over the control pad to press the screen. For this reason, the Shield doesn?t make for a tablet substitute.

P1040460

But let?s move on to the more exciting things, like game play. Shield comes preloaded with two free games ? Sonic 4 Episode II THD and Expendable: Rearmed ? but you can download more from the Google Play Store or from the Shield Store. You can access the latter by pressing the Nvidia button in the middle of the control pad, and in the store, you?ll find games that are optimized to be played on the Shield. Currently, there are only about 30 to 40 titles. There?s also a Shield Games section where you?ll find all your downloaded games from the Shield Store, and a section for streaming PC games.

I played casual games like Cordy, in which you have to help a cute little robot solve puzzles, and more-intensive shooter games like Shadowgun THD. With each title, I was impressed at how great the graphics looked on the Shield?s 720p HD screen. There weren?t any hiccups in performance, even for the more graphics-heavy games like AVP: Evolution, and the controllers provided much more precision than a smartphone touchscreen. The device?s stereo speakers also pumped out an incredible amount of volume. Compared to smartphone and tablet speakers, the audio was rich, not tinny.

While the Shield-optimized games ran great, other titles I downloaded from the Google Play Store didn?t work with the device?s controllers. For example, EA?s Dead Space only worked with the touchscreen.

Serious gamers might also lament the lack of top-tier games, though the PC streaming feature might make up for it. It gives you the freedom to keep playing games without being shackled to your desk. But there are a bunch of caveats.

P1040457

First, you have to have a desktop PC equipped with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 graphics card or higher, and a dual-band router. If your system doesn?t meet these requirements, then the Shield?s streaming functions are useless.

Nvidia hooked me up with a compatible system, and I streamed games like Borderlands 2 and Skyrim. There was minimal lag between what I was seeing on the PC and on the Shield and, again, performance was solid. But it wasn?t without faults. For example, when I moved to a room on the opposite side of my apartment from the router, my connection dropped. The PC-streaming feature is still in the testing phase, so hopefully Nvidia will resolve some of these issues soon.

Nvidia estimates the Shield?s battery life at about 10 hours of casual gaming, five to six hours of intense gaming, and 15 hours of video playback. I didn?t do a formal battery test, but with a mix of about four hours playing casual games and three hours playing intense games, the Shield still had about 25 percent battery life at the end of the day.

Nvidia has built a fun and powerful gaming handheld in the Shield, with lots of potential. But for now, it?s too expensive and needs more games.
