Apple issuing iTunes refund after Breaking Bad season 5 mixup

As Walter White sets out hellbent on returning his hard-earned meth money to his family, iTunes customers miffed over a fifth season of Breaking Bad split in two are also receiving a small deposit. Apple has refunded the purchase price of $22.99 to those that feel they were duped into paying twice for the same iTunes Season Pass.

The problem stems from AMC?s decision to air the fifth and final season of Breaking Bad in two parts, spread out over a year. Thus, the two sets of eight episodes appeared on iTunes as Breaking Bad: Season 5 and Breaking Bad: The Final Season. While that falls squarely on the cable network?s shoulders (Apple makes this clear in the statement they mailed to customers), Cupertino?s camp is still heeding the cries of those that believe a single purchase should have included all 16 episodes.

The whole debacle highlights some interesting issues in television marketing during a cable television boom spurred on by the likes of iTunes and Netflix. Splitting a single season into two parts might be something a network can get away with in traditional broadcast formats, but for viewers that do a majority of their watching via streaming services, there is little use for the marketing fluff. In the case of Breaking Bad?s final season, it only led to confusion.
