Mary Tyler Moore has decided to undergo surgery to remove a meningioma, a benign tumor that arises from the membranes surrounding the brain, according to People.com.

?At the recommendation of her neurologist, who has been monitoring this for years, and a neurosurgeon, Mary decided to proceed with this fairly routine procedure,? a rep for the 74-year-old actress said.

Meningiomas are said to occur most commonly in older women and don?t always require immediate treatment.????????????????????????????????

This isn?t the first medical setback for the veteran actress, who gained fame in the 1960s and ?70s for her roles in the television series ?The Dick Van Dyke Show? and ?The Mary Tyler Moore Show.?

During her early 30s, Moore was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which the body?s immune system attacks the beta cells in the pancreas.

In her 2009 book, ?Growing Up Again,? the actress opened up about her personal battle with the illness, which has caused her to lose most of her vision.

Moore has since spent her time raising awareness and advocating for diabetes research. She has been the international chairwoman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for over 25 years.
